I don’t believe generalizations are precise and accurate representations of any situations. I don’t want anyone to lose their job or be yelled at or what not because neither of those two things are helpful or productive. This review does not represent all L&Ls nor does this review encourage you to avoid going to this specific location. This is just so you are aware of the experience of someone who lives here had and hopefully allows you to make a more informed decision. I found a roach in my food and I won’t be going there or recommending people to go there. If someone asks me about it, I will share my experience but I am not going to post up outside of the stores and rant about it. This is what customers do though. They give reviews and hold businesses accountable. If someone feels this is out of line well you can feel free to share your own opinion. This review is just about the experience I had from the food to the customer service. The food was like $14 total which is not an issue.
At around 3:43 PM or 3:44 PM on 01/06/2021 I made a purchase of coconut shrimp plate (by the way that is not on the actual menu you simply go in and ask for coconut shrimp and they give it to you) with half rice and noodles as well as two scoops of macaroni salad for takeout. 15 minutes later after arriving home I sat down to eat the food. I transfer the mac salad to a plate just because they had packed it in a small red and white paper container in a brown paper bag. No big deal. As I was midway through eating the food I see something dark in the food and looking closer I confirm that it is a roach in the macaroni salad. Since I live near L&L I went back to the restaurant about 30 minutes after my initial purchase with my plate food box and the plate that had the mac salad.
After the cashier gets off the phone, I calmly explain to the lady that as I was eating food I found a roach in the mac salad as the story above. Right after saying those words, right after finishing that? Man. She. Went. Off.
The cashier’s face flushed red, she immediately began to yell saying that I planted the roach from outside, that it doesn’t count because the mac salad is not in the container that it was provided in, that the roach is from somewhere else.
In a calm tone because raising your voice never helps in situation like these, in a calm tone I asked her to calm down and simply explained to her that:
I am not calling her and the staff bad people. I am not saying her and the staff are incompetent at their jobs. I understand these things happen to some people and unfortunately, I am one of those people. I don’t know if the food is prepared on site from raw ingredients or how it is stored but if it is they need to question that whole batch of food and storage system. I don’t know if the food is simply delivered from a vendor and comes prepackaged/precooked to be cooked/reheated but if it is they need to contact the franchise owner and vendor and report a food safety issue to ensure corrective measures are taken. Sure not the greatest discussion to have I understand but better that than a health scare.
I thought I was pretty calm, logical and lodging a reasonable complaint so I asked for a refund. She snapped back quickly and said no. I asked if I can talk to someone else and she yells “Go ahead and call for someone, I am the only one who speaks English here everyone else speaks Mandarin.” I say excuse me in a loud voice towards the back kitchen but get no response. No idea if what she says was true or if the folks in the back chose to just dodge this whole situation. I calmly informed her that I will be contacting my bank and disputing the charges so the payment is reversed and left the restaurant. I did contact the state of Hawaii food safety branch, my bank (who took care of it easily) and the L&L Franchise about this. I found a dead roach in my food. It could have been taken care of professionaly but man this regular story took a crazy left turn when I went back to speak with the cashier. People are just...

Read moreThis location has improved greatly. All food is made to order now instead of sitting in large chafing dishes under hot lights for hours. The coconut shrimp was perfect and crisp and not soggy or mushy at all. I got noodles and fried rice as a side and the cabbage and onions in the noodles were fresh and crisp tasting instead of rubbery and soggy like most Chinese take out places that serve plate lunches using premade food sitting in chafing dishes. I spoke to Lady, the owner, and she was friendly and very concerned with giving customers the best food experience possible. I was really impressed with the quality of the food now. It takes a little more time to wait for a fresh cooked order, but it is definitely worth it. Prices are good for the huge portions that are given here. Plenty enough to take home and enjoy a second meal with a two choice plate with 1/2 fried rice and 1/2 noodles as a side. L&L is always a quality option, but this Waimea location is the best one I have...
