One of the things we wanted to do was to experience everything the island of Kauai had to offer. In one of the books they mentioned the black sandy beaches of Waimea State recreation park. We had to see that! Personally, we thought the sand was beautiful although a chocolate brown color and the pier is obviously well used for fishing and for photo opportunities as the sun sets. The area suffers a little bit from overuse perhaps as the grass is worn down and the bathrooms have graffiti all over the inside stalls. That is the only reason it didn't get all 5 stars. Read moreI'm used to piers being wooden. This one was not wooden, and so i felt the need to walk on it all over. All the way to the end and back again. The beach around it was the most brown beach i saw in all of Kauai. The pier itself felt safe, but the views weren't really interesting. It was kinda nice in general to walk on a pier i guess, but if you're not in the area, this isn't really worth stopping by. I saw some people fishing there so maybe it's better if you're into that, but I'm not personally into that. The water was pretty brown too. Big contrast from the turquoise water elsewhere...

Otherwise, not a choice for the views or the area. It’s just close to my parents house and we catch a lot of fish. The water is murky with sediment/leaves/sticks etc. I wouldn’t let my kid swim here, we deemed it a fishing spot only.
