We used to come here at least once a week for years under the previous management. Since the new managemnet took over we have been here twice and both times were disapppinted.
The current side dishes are simply not as good (kimchi and cucumber are both soft and sour as it was crunchy and fresh from our past experiences at this place). How much do we miss that small salty and crispy fried fish. Now the small fish is replaced with a bread coated fish with larger bones instead.
For combo (bbq comes with tofu soup), however, be aware if you choose oyster tofu soup instead of others, there will be an extra $2 charge. It is not such a big deal at all but simply not a good gesture from a new business that has raised price for this combo drastically already. We chose pork soup instead of our oyster soup simply because we didn't want to buying into such gesture. Not returning- after years of patronizing this beloved place. The female server asked whether we need some more beansprout and we said yes. She walked away and did not return with anything. Then she came back 15 minutes later and asked us the same question and we declined.
Tofu soup (with pork) was fine but bbq beef is less tasty (flavor not as strong as what we preferred). I do like their presentation of white rice in a larger metal bowl which is less risky to handle.
The owner (a lady) seemed nice and walked around to greet diners. The place does seem to be cleaner after remodeling, especially restroom is in a...
Read moreWalked in and it was the same venue as the old Jang Soon tofu. I went there all the time with my family so this was going to hard to please.
The venue was the same wooden interior that we were familiar with but things were all new from utensils, the cups/plates, and the new TV on the wall with some music. Servers were smiling which was a bit different from the old experience.
Now the verdict: Banchan set was the same spread: cucumber kimchi, kimchi, bean sprouts, potato salad, and fermented squid. I got the beef tofu soup and initially I was wondering where the toppings went. When I had the first spoon full, I noticed the broth felt more flavorful than before. As I was eating it, I noticed the soup overall had more meat so I was pleased. The only thing I would say was I got level 4 and it wasn’t spicy enough. My friend got the stone pot bibimbap and the portions were hearty enough that he took back home some leftovers.
I ended up packing some kimchi banchan to go as usual. Prices are still as reasonable as I remember so I...
Read moreI mourned when Jang Soo Tofu closed. Hands down the best soon tofu place in Washington State. Seoul Tofu soon opened and I begrudgingly took a chance on it. IT WAS JUST ABOUT AS GOOD!! I found out the same kitchen staff remained and the kalbi and soon tofu soup recipes remained intact.
In fact the preparation of the rice in the stone pots has dramatically improved. The rice in the bottom was toasted extremely well and was delightful with barley tea as a meal finish.
It reminded me of the rice my mom used to cook. I felt a little emotional eating it.
