Well, it's difficult giving any establishment a bad rating but Wonder Whip earned it. More like "wonder why we even stopped here and wasted our money". Exterior has a run down 50's feel- cute-ish, but only if it receives a seriously needed makeover. Everyone says to try Wonder Whip and to get a Wonder Burger. We go into the drive through, order a Wonder Burger, chicken fillet sandwich, and a corn dog. We wait in line for about 10-15 minutes. Finally got to the window and we were greeted quite nicely- thus the 2 stars on Service- took our card for payment. Handed our bank card back- no receipt or offered the option for a receipt. We wait for another 3-5 minutes before they hand us our drink cups, that were wet covered with soda on the outside. It's never fun being handed wet sticky cups. Another minute or two goes by and they pass out our food bag. Didn't look to have any adults inside who actually had leadership and control of the operation. Reaching into the bag immediately and grabbing a French fry: it's hot warm, but not fresh out of the oil hot hot. There was no salt on the fries, plain and boring- no taste. We traveled back home just to find out they forgot the chicken sandwich. The burger was NOTHING like the picture displayed on top of their building. The picture shows this big thick juicy piece of ground beef, but what we got was a dried out 1/4 patty. Didn't taste like it was made with the freshest ingredients either. Again, no chicken sandwich to judge. Corn dog: small pre-frozen corn dogs you buy in bulk from any grocery store, was NOT deep fried- I'm guessing some kind of dog roller heater or hot box. It wasn't pleasant and screamed cheap. But they charged $3 for it. Overpriced and gross. I don't understand why all the hype. It's pathetic. And yet I've seen lines wrapped around the building. Does no one in this area have taste buds or standards? Overall, it was a very disappointing experience and I have no plans on returning any time soon. Maybe one day I'll give it a second chance and hopefully I'll be able to change my review to something more...
Read moreThe pineapple and raspberry Dole Whip is my favorite, however the serving size varies greatly from one order to the next. It all depends on who is making your cone or dish. The staff and clients would benefit if portions were weighed out or if more training was offered to staff. Today we ordered two Dole Whip Cones and one was over double the size of the other. The reason for the low rating is due to their safe food handling practices at this location. I noticed they posted the rating of "A" and typically always see all employees wearing disposable gloves, the shocking part is the staff does not change the gloves after handling money, touching clients hands during food/money exchange and touching multuple surfaces along with their face/hair. Today I witnessed one of the young ladies pull her hair up in a ponytail while wearing gloves and then proceeded to continue making food without changing gloves.
Return visit:::No change. Still Gross!! The unsanitary glove use is still a big problem. Most employees had gloves on but I watched all them handle money, touch random objects around the kitchen area and again play with their hair without ever changing gloves. I then witnessed one girl reach into an already bagged food order and eat some fries. Other girl laughed and then grabbed a handful from under the heat-lamp warmer and walk around eating.
In addition to just being nasty, they are slow!!! It could be that they have 15 teenagers laughing, dancing and throwing things at each other instead of helping customers. Please, if you are the owner or hiring manager, hire an adult that can teach these young kids how to help and act...
Read moreI have come to expect lengthy wait times, rude employees and incorrect orders with cold food from chain restaurants (ie; McD's, Rally's, Wendy's, etc ) but not a local landmark. Unfortunately, it seems this pride of Owensboro seems to be slipping into those poor habits. I recently spent 20+ minutes in line only to discover, once down the road, the specialty burger that I ordered (which I paid extra for) was nothing more than a cold plain cheeseburger. So I turned around and returned and asked for what I had paid for. Surprisingly, I was calm and polite! For whatever reason, all the employees stared at me as though I had done something wrong. The grill cook and another employee stood at the grill whispering to one another and looking over their shoulders at me. It was very unsettling. When they finally put it together, mostly correct, they shoved it out the window with a "here". With no apologies. This is/was my favorite burger place in town. I eat here 6 or 7 times a month and I'm seeing a disappointing trend with this Owensboro landmark. Lately, more often than not, my orders have been wrong and met with the same unapologetic attitude. I work an hour from Owensboro and I encourage all that I come in contact not to miss out on this gem of Owensboro. Unfortunately, this decline seems to be the case with the Wonder Whip and I will no longer be able to recommend it to others until they reassess the way they treat and appreciate...
