This was the absolute worst Mexican restaurant we've ever been to. I'm not even exaggerating here. My husband is in total agreement as well. Mexican food is our absolute favorite food so we try all kinds of new places to find more favorites. We've never been here and the rating didn't seem too bad we figured it would be fun to check it out. The atmosphere wasn't bad as far as decor goes but when we walked in the smell alone should have made us high tail it right on out of there! It smelled like something was burning really bad. We went ahead because my daughter was already wanting something to eat and acting like a crazy spazz. She had to get the cheese sauce which was absolutely not at all like anyone else's cheese sauce. If I were blindfolded I would never have guessed it was cheese sauce at all because it tasted like canned sausage gravy without all the chunks which was so absolutely bizarre and gross... We all agreed it tasted like this except my daughter who was starving and loves sausage lol. The chips were awful it was like they reheated some generic unsalted store bought kind or something they were thick and had a stale texture to them.. The salsa wasn't good either and had no heat to it or good flavor then they brought out hot salsa and it was so spicy that I choked and the flavor was really weird so it wasn't even edible. We ordered against our best judgement the Fajita Quesadilla meals since they were $14 a piece and we've never ever had to pay that much for a fajita quesadilla at most we've only ever payed $11 and it was a giant quesadilla at that other place too. We expected it to be a big portion to take home leftovers at that price like I usually do. The waitress was nice and brought us water refills often so that was nice and she was really nice to my daughter as well. While waiting for our food to come (which was a VERY long time and drove my daughter crazy) a fajita plate came through to go into the next room and made our seating area so smokey for a good 5 - 10 minutes you could see it in the air and it didn't smell good either. Then our plates came they used grated cheddar cheese in theirs which is also not like the usual quesadilla we are used to. Not only that but they horribly skimped on the veggies and meat inside. It was even more ridiculous for the price we payed to order them. The rice was gross as well it didn't taste anything like Spanish rice...Their refried beans weren't really refried beans as you would expect from a Mexican restaurant they were just pinto beans with some of them smooshed. The quesadilla wasn't inedible but it certainly wasn't good either and we left feeling ripped off! Bottom line the value was terrible and I've had better Mexican food at taco bell.. The wait was awful and I could have made way better Mexican food at home for...
Read moreI have to defend the restaurant against the last years' worth of bad reviews and let everyone know why I keep coming back here. Firstly, the owner/manager George is a great guy. He could easily be a politician. If you say hi to him once, he will remember you forever. I've been going here for the last year or so and after my second visit, he remembered me every time (including favorite drinks and food). Very accommodating, very friendly. Secondly, The frozen margaritas are THE BEST I've ever had. When the weather is warm, I NEED a frozen marg weekly. When it's not warm, I still want one occasionally. I've been to most Mexican restaurants in the city and nothing touches this. Each pitcher is made individually in a blender. The consistency is unlike any I've ever had before. No slushie machine. I go to Chicago monthly and am moving there soon... I have been looking for something/some place to replace these margaritas, but nothing is close. Yeah, the decor is tacky, there are "regulars" who go behind the bar, the menu isn't top notch gourmet Mexican... But it's well worth it. The decor adds to the ambiance, the people going behind the bar are personal friends of the owners, and some of their dishes aren't great but some are the best Mexican I've had (try the beef & chorizo tacos or the mole - if you ask, you can get mole sauce on anything) Off all of the great restaurants in Dayton, I'm going to miss this...
Read moreIve been looking forward to trying the food here for a while now, and after seeing all the reviews I feel like it was a let down or wasted trip. The salsa didn't have much flavor or heat to it, but after adding a little of their hot sauce it tasted better.
The burrito was ok, the soft taco was disappointing. I expected fountain machine soda, not bottled....except for the Mexican Coca Cola.
The flower peddler was....awkward, to say the least. For that reason alone, I will not be returning. I watched a staff member taking the meal break out on the restaurant floor and a customer come up and hangout with them. I don't know what their relationship was (customer and staff, friends, etc) but it wouldn't be something I'd be comfortable with if a stranger or customer came over to my table and hung out with me while I ate.
Seeing the chef come out to the dining area still wearing his black rubber gloves and interacting with customers was a red flag. I really hope he changes gloves and washes his hands frequently.
It's my opinion, that this falls into the same disappointing group as Chuy's when it comes to Mexican food..... Taco Bell can do...
