After visiting Kinston for the weekend, my boyfriend and I decided to check out Sugar Hill on a Saturday evening after leaving an event. It had been a good 5-6 hours since we had our breakfast, so we were starved. When we got there, it was kind of busy but we decided on a Greek pizza and a salad and placed our order to go. While we were there, we waited for about 30 minutes and noticed that many people with large orders who arrived after us were getting their food but we were not. After asking about how much longer it would be, our pizza was brought from the kitchen a few minutes later at room temperature. Something that I noticed while I was there, too, was that the door to the kitchen was open and that I could look in. I could see people preparing food and I could see random guests going up to the door to thank the cook. This was very odd to me. We were asked what else we had with our order (which annoyed me because they should know), given our salad and we left. The pizza was actually really good. We ate a couple pieces and had some salad, but then my stomach immediately began to hurt. I tried to sleep, but could not sleep through the pain. It's then when I realized that I had food poisoning. After a long night spent in the bathroom and taking activated charcoal, my weekend was effectively ruined and I had to push back my return flight to go home an entire day and call out of work for the following day. The unfortunate thing is that not only did I get food poisoning, but my boyfriend's mom ended up in the bathroom after eating it and my boyfriend had stomach pain. I'm not sure if the preparation practices were unsanitary, if the food was cooked to the wrong temperature or if one of the toppings on my food was old, but the point is, I will never eat at this business again. They seem to struggle to know what they are doing and the fact that I had to ask if my food was done was a real problem. I had Pizza Hut the week before and although it was flavorless, I didn't get sick. I would suggest Domino's or...
Read moreWe were passing through town and ordered online because we wanted pizza different from Dominos and Pizza Hut back home.
We like the pizza here. However, we feel as though some items here are well overpriced! By the time they added tax to our 18" meat lovers pizza, our cost was $30. Sure, we like the meat lovers here better than the previously mentioned restaurants, but not that much better!
I once visited a restaurant that displayed a sign which read "Cheap food ain't good and good food ain't cheap." Yet I believe this restaurant carries that idea too far.
The previous time we visited this restaurant, we were craving a good chef salad, so we called in our order. Once I picked it up and got back to the car, my wife and I were anxious to dig in. But when I retrieved the salad from the bag, I was shocked at the size (or shall I say lack of size) of it. I carried it back in and asked if there may have been a mistake because I ordered the chef salad with a price of $10. I thought they had gotten my order mixed up, but they informed me that it was accurate. I told them that the size was comparable to a small side salad at most places, and they replied that the ingredients were expensive and it costs a lot to make a salad. I responded that I could go to the grocery store and get a larger salad than that with more ingredients for $5 and they said they didn't think that was possible, but their price was correct for the salad they gave me.
I told them am well now I know and will not be odering any more salads from them. I left and stopped at the Piggly Wiggly in Ayden to get more salad to add to what I had just purchased. My statement about the size & cost of a salad was confirmed when I saw several chef salads for $4 which were considerably larger than the one purchased from Sugar...
Read moreI had an absolutely horrible experience. There was no menu with prices anywhere in sight. The only thing showing any prices was a “Specials” sign, and when I tried to order from it, an employee who wasn’t even taking my order suddenly jumped in and said, “That’s only until three.” Nowhere in the restaurant did it say the specials ended at a certain time.
I’ve been to plenty of restaurants while traveling, and none operate like this. If a special is time-limited, it always states the time. This one didn’t—and again, it was the only place I could see any prices.
When I asked about the price difference (since no prices were posted anywhere), they just gave me the total without breaking it down. I specifically asked for the cost of one drink and a pizza, but the cashier simply stared at me like I was the one with the problem. The blonde teenage employee—the same one who had jumped in earlier—was particularly rude.
My husband and I didn’t learn the individual prices until after we had paid and gotten the receipt. When our food was finally ready, it looked like it had been thrown into the box, and part of it wasn’t even covered. Carrying both a drink and the pizza box, I couldn’t help but think—what if the food touched the gross door on the way out?
Overall, I will not be returning. The service was completely...
