This was a great restaurant with a bar! Comfortable, great atmosphere, low-key, and just an all-around great place to go to for drinks and food!
I live in Boston...it was my first time here, and I'll definitely be back!
We sat at the bar, which is just our preference, the bartender was very nice, attentive, friendly, and made GREAT drinks. (We both got some "Punch" drink that's on the menu - I ABSOLUTELY recommend this drink! Strong but fruity and it's easy to drink...way too easy to drink lol!
Appetizers: ~ We started with the Calamari with hot peppers on the side - absolutely delicious, crispy, mostly rings, not chewy at all, and cooked perfectly! ~ Also as an appetizer, my boyfriend got a cup of Clam Chowder, which was full of very fresh Clams, and the Chowder itself was perfect, not too thin and not too thick - again, absolutely delicious! ~ I got a cup of the Fish Chowder (Haddock Chowder, which was SO good! Surprisingly, it's hard to find a restaurant wit Fish Chowder! The Fish Chowder was literally filled with tons of good size pieces of Haddock! And, the Chowder itself was a little thinner consistency than the Clam Chowder, which is normal. It wasn't watery at all but still rich and creamy. Both Chowders came with Oyster Crackers. The "cup" size was a great portion!
The Fish Chowder was so good that we went back the next day before we headed back to Boston so that I could get a Bowl of Fish Chowder to take home! (Yeah, it was THAT good!)
Dinner: ~ My boyfriend got the grilled Salmon - plain...just seasoned with pepper, lemon, and a pinch of salt. And, for sides he got squash and garlic mashed potatoes. He loved it! I tried his Salmon, and honestly, it was one of the best pieces of Salmon I've ever had! Salmon was cooked perfectly, extremely fresh and flavorful! ~ And, I got the Swordfish but I got it plain and added Extra Cajun Seasoning - oh my God...it was SO good - cooked perfectly, not dried out, extremely flavorful! Definitely one of the best Swordfish dinners I've had! For sides, I had fresh broccoli and the garlic mashed potatoes. GET THE GARLIC MASHED POTATOES!! They were SO GOOD and had just the right amount of garlic!
I give Weathervane Restaurant a 10 out of 10! Comfy, cozy, laid back atmosphere and absolutely AMAZING food and drinks with great portions!
I can't wait to come back!
** I really thought I took pictures of the food but, apparently, I didn't...I apologize to anyone reading this. I never write a review without photos as proof. But, just trust me on this, the food was extremely good, seafood is fresh, and it's definitely worth...

This was one of the BEST seafood restaurants I've ever gone to...and, being a New Englander, I've been to a lot of them including those on Cape Cod and in Rhode Island!
A granddaughter of the owner waited on us...extremely nice! And we were given plenty of time to figure out what we wanted, with this lady answering every question in a friendly and helpful way. In fact, she made us feel very welcomed there.
The rolls they served us were warm, large, fresh, and soft, and eaten almost as soon as they arrived. No problem, though, because a replacement came almost immediately. Lol.
Same with our sodas : constantly refilled without our needing to ask.
Now for the best part : served in a 'bucket' along with plenty of melted butter and plenty of broth, my Steamers were cooked PERFECTLY! Even the larger ones weren't rubbery from being even SLIGHTLY overcooked. DELICIOUS!
AND THE FRIED WHOLE-BELLIED CLAMS WERE TO DIE FOR! :) PLENTY OF THEM TO EAT, and each one coated with a light crunchy batter. Tender...succulent...flavorful...everything you'd want in a whole-bellied fried clam!
Also, the bellies were a good size, not like the 'microscopic' bellies some places try to push onto a true fried clam lover! :)
My husband, being the Land Lubber that he is, ordered a cheeseburger that was cooked exactly the way he wanted it...rare...and so juicy he had to keep napkins close by. Lol. And with the portions of food being so generous, he never did finish everything while there. But then, neither did I.
(Yup, we both had to do the 'doggy bag' thing.)
Other family members ordered scallops and lobster rolls along with 'chowdah'. Everything was deemed ''GREAT!"
Also, do yourself a favor and order their onion rings : thinly-sliced rings fried to flavorful perfection using that same batter that the fried clams are coated with. Best onion rings ever!!
Gosh, now I'm hungry...and too far away,...
Read moreDo you know how it feels to meet an old fast friend unexpectedly and find that you are picking up an existing conversation from many years (maybe decades) ago? This is what it felt like the last two evenings when my wife Nancy, her sister Sally, and I dropped into the original (it turns out) THE WEATHERVANE Restaurant on US Highway in Kittery, Maine. The day before yesterday we arrived for a couple of nights at our favorite vacation haunt. Being hungry but road weary, all three of us noticed the building and memories of good times in the Albany, NY area's two franchises came back - - including Nancy's and my Wedding Rehearsal Dinner at one of these two restaurants. The food and service were always top-notch. Knowing this, all 3 of us agreed and we stopped in for what we unanimously agreed was the best meal any of us could remember; now I am 65 and my wife is 56 and her sister is 54 - - that's a great deal of remembrance! Our Server was Evan, and he was MAGNIFICENT in every way! What an amazing job the WaitStaff and CookStaff did for us! In fact, we were so taken with how well things went that we returned to have supper again the very next day. This time, Emily waited on us; again the food was brilliant, and Emily was every bit the measure of our experience in the day before. THE WEATHERVANE earns every fraction of the 5-STARS rating that I am proud to give it and your people. Thank you all for making us feel like family. Keep up the great work and we hope that some day, THE WEATHERVANE Restaurant can run up the flag again in the Capital Region of New York...
