Tldr recommended, great over all... Pizza sauce needs work.
I am a self proclaimed pizza connoisseur but... not a pizza snob by any means. I love pizza from the highest end neapolitan to chain delivery places to the lowest of frozen pizzas.. I love pizza of all kinds.
Having moved from the twin cities more than a few years back and leaving favorites behind I have been on a search for my favorite pizzas around here. It's been hard. It's hard when you have your perfect pizza (Rocco's in St Paul) and have to move on. But here I am.
My experience with Pizza King La Crosse was awesome. I ordered on the phone for a baked pick up from a friendly staff member. I arrived when they said it would be ready and it was just being brought out as I arrived, I was checked out by a friendly staff member, and I arrived home with piping hot pizzas ready to eat.
We ordered a Terry's Italian Pie thin and a hand tossed Canadian bacon and bacon.
The Terry's pie. What a great combination of ingredients. Bravo. The flavor of the crust was great and you will love it if you enjoy a very thin cracker crust. I, personally, am looking for something slightly thicker BUT it was great for a cracker crust.
Also the sausage used on Terry's pie was awesome. Loved it. One of the best pizza sausages I have had.
The hand tossed pizza... Oh my. What an awesome crust. Loved it! I was outright surprised at how good it was.
The wife and kids thought the Canadian bacon used was not very good. I was okay with it but agree.
So why only 4 stars?
I recommend this place and will go back for sure. The one thing holding it back from being a 5 or even a 6 star place is the sauce. It needs work. Like...canned tomato paste mixed with canned pureed tomatoes and not much more I am guessing. This was masked on the Terry's pie by its awesome flavorful sausage and the sprinkle of oregano but it really stuck out on the hand tossed bacon pizza. Which was a shame with how great the crust was.
I know this won't change the sauce and I am sure some love it. But here's to hoping they throw some love...
Read moreI've been a customer for well over 20 years and I may never go back again after the rudeness shown towards me by one of the owner's son. I ordered my usual pizza and when I came to pick up the pizza the owner's son waited on me.. I went to pay for the pizza and questioned the pricing of my pizza because I haven't picked up a pizza for a few months and didn't realize there had been a price increase. He told me blame it on Biden and then proceeded to show me the price on a specialty pizza called I think the Kings Special.. which is exactly what I had ordered less the black olives. and like three dollars less in price.. I then said Oh maybe next time I'll order the Kings Special instead. Evidently he didn't like me saying that because as he took my money he looked at me, then said I've never seen such a complainer, which he directed at me. I guess me wanting to save a few bucks next time on a pizza was complaining. He never said thanks for the order never put the cooking instructions in the pizza. all he did is make a rude uncalled for comment, turn his back to me and walk away.. I then left, put my pizza in my car and went back in the store and asked to see the manager and the owner's other son was at the counter so I explained to him how his brother had acted towards me and the comment made. I'm sure nothing will be said to their father about this so that is why I am posting this review because if his rude son is treating me like this he is treating others in the same fashion.. Treating customers like this is no way to run a business that has such a great pizza and it will not be good for the future because as far as I'm concerned I will be telling people...
Read moreThis is a small shop in Lax. It takes up very little square footage on a busy corner. Not much can be said for the inside. It's very efficient - no sitting room, except to wait for your food. Cleanliness is next to godliness, and this store has always been VERY neat and tidy. The walls are pristine white and everything is always wiped down.
The service isn't overly friendly, but that's okay. They fill a lot of orders per hour. In the few times we have visited, the phone is always ringing when we go in. So I can't blame them for not being overly friendly. But they are courteous and speak to you with respect and deference.
The food is five-star for it's genre. The Gyros, I can say, are among the best I've had and I've been to a few Greek restaurants that serve almost exclusively gyros. The wings are delicious. They don't compare to the yellow conglomerate that everyone raves about, but they are freakin' delicious anyways. A great accompaniment to the pizza. The pizza is awesome. There's no better way to describe it. As a college student, I like pizza. And I am picky about my pizza. The thin crust crumbles delectably on your palate. The cheese is exactly what it should be: A tasty matrix that holds everything together and doesn't slide off when you are transporting deliciousness to your mouth hole. The ingredients are fresh. And their signature flavors are a unique adventure.
If you go to Pizza King, I suggest getting a small pizza with a side of Wings or a Gyro or Pesto Bread. This was you can experience all they have to offer.
This little hole in the ground comes highly...
