Hunan Star — Restaurant in La Plata

I would give this zero stars if I could. I called in and placed an order at 9:26pm; 1/26/2023 (restaurant closes at 10:00pm). The employee that took our order informed us that they were still delivering at that time. We have asked to pay credit over the phone but she insisted "CASH ONLY"for the order (of course, their intention was not to come, so they wouldn't have to be obligated with us paying credit). Time has went by and we realize that no one had showed up. We have called them at 10:07pm from an alternate phone number and at 10:08pm, from the initial phone number from which the order was placed(no one picked up).

Meanwhile, my porch light was on, I sat in the room next to the front door and also I have a doorbell camera, that alerts me when someone is approaching my front door (still no one have showed up). The evening of January 28th, we called Hunan Star to place an order but first informed them how they never showed on the night of January 26th. They told us that a lady have attempted to deliver our food and rung the door bell and that no answered the door. They have also stated that someone called, but I have never received any calls from the restaurant that night.

The manager stated that we are only to pick up our food moving forward and they would no longer be delivering to this address. I offered to come up to the restaurant to show proof of door camera from my security system app and my At&t phone log, but the restaurant refuse for me to show proof. Why? because no one ever came. The manager was nasty can could care less about losing a loyal customer.

I ended up reading up reviews from Eastern Chinese and stumbled across customer(s), informing us not to order from Hunan Star because of the customer service and quality of food. Don't believe me, go have a read for yourself.

My original review which had five stars is below because of the irony, but I can't support this business anymore. Some time over a year ago we ordered from here and while enjoying our meal we noticed something at the bottom of our eggdrop soup. It turned out to be fruit sticker labels for lemons. I called to complain, they refunded the soup and we kept our distance.

Fast forward to July 2024 and we decide to be open-minded and give them another shot. It didn't go well. As I cut into a steamed dumpling I noticed a strange texture that was rather tough... Upon further inspection it turned out to be balled up plastic wrap inside my dumpling. I flagged the server to complain and cancel the rest of our order. We'd had enough. The server attempted to justify why this happened based off the technique they use to make the dumplings. I said that I was feeding my one year old and regardless of why, this is unacceptable to serve to any customer. At this point she got angry, grabbed the plate of dumplings from me and stormed off, never coming back to the table.

This place needs to thoroughly reasses how they handle food safety because they are clearly taking shortcuts. While I understand the customer isn't always right, you still should never serve plastic choking hazards to your customers and then make excuses for it. We won't be going back unless they fall under new ownership.

Yaaasssss!! This is the place to go, hands down, in Laplata for Chinese food!! I’ve only tried their shrimp fried rice for back to back days and every other day for 2 weeks. Well worth the money but they are not too overpriced. The fried rice already comes with egg, onions and bean spouts. I add peas and carrots(but I do ask for the peas to be cooked more so they are softer and they accommodated my request). Shrimp friend rice is absolutely delicious. Shrimp is de-vine and fresh. I highly recommend this Chinese place especially for the Waldorf & White Plains area peeps. Way better than Benny’s. Now that my money isn’t affected by the govt shutdown(Thx God), I plan to order a plethora of tasty new Chinese cuisine, such as Egg Foo Young, shrimp chow mein, maybe a non-raw sushi roll vegan roll, and much more… The staff are friendly, funny and hv good memories of my orders(well I have been consistently ordering take out for 2 wks). And it’s busy, which to me shows is a good sign their food is good & consistent. Even, if I need to fix it or chg due to taste, they are not jerks about fixing my order. I will give updates of the other dishes soon.. I plan to go here for date night, girls night and family fun.
