Not horrible but not great. I will start with positives. Clean, cute, food was good diner breakfast but not great diner breakfast. I had the moody poached eggs. Eggs cooked correctly. Now the rest of my review: the menu description of my eggs was not clear on how they were served. Just poached with sausage. Ok fine. It came with potatoes. I did not touch my potatoes i would have asked for fruit. Total waste. But then my husband wanted one item but asked to substitute hash browns instead of pancakes. Nope they would not do. I am not a fan of a place I cannot sub out minor items, even for a unchange I will pay. I don't like to waste and I am paying for something, so it should be how I want it not how they want it. Next employees: the kid serving the coffee and cleaning counters setting tables etc.. no complaints. He worked hard, was thorough on cleaning, quiet but sweet. My server had a personality for the locals. Never asked how our food was. Sat down and spoke with the table next to us as we waited on our check. Must have heard me comment because then we got our check. No thank you from the man at the register. Overall not the experience I was looking for and I will not be back. Great place for locals i am sure, but if you don't frequent don't expect the same treatment. Oh for record 27 years in Barnegat, 25 in Toms River. I think I could be considered...
Read moreClassic diner experience. I personally use the rueben sandwich as a reference point when judging a diner and this place has one of the best I've had. The corned beef was cooked well and not dry or bland like is the downfall of so many diners I've been to across the Garden State. The Swiss melted beautifully and glued the entire sandwich together perfectly and stretched gloriously with each bite making for not only a delicious, but also visually pleasing experience (who doesn't love gooey melty cheese after all??). The rye bread was, as well, not dry or displeasing in any way and was toasted to perfection. The dressing was good but most importantly it wasn't slathered over the sandwich to a point where it was literally drowning out the flavors of everything else. If I had to nitpick anything about the sandwich I'd have personally preferred a little bit more saurkraut but I imagine this to be a very easy fix if I were to simply ask for extra on my next visit. As for the service, it felt very homey, casual, and friendly but not least of all, very quick. Within 10 minutes of entering we were seated and served. No card payments are accepted but they do have an atm on site for those who don't...
Read moreI may be prejudiced here, but I have been eating at this spot for nearly 50 years now. I still remember the first burger I had there, evidently as told to me by a good friend who's a regular, the cook/owner at the time was called Poison Pete. This is dating back to the mid 70's. He would overload EVERYONE with food earning him that nickname, and I can assure you that it was most certainly true. The hamburger I got was as big as my head, extending 3" outside the edges of a large kaiser roll. Encased in tin foil which held in the hot grease until you took a bite... I still remember being scalded on my legs from it, but damn it was worth it.
Just had breakfast again there yesterday, and let me tell you. Even if the prices were like most places, it would have been completely worth it. Classic spot, classic menu, simple good food and for A BARGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean like CHEAP! For a full portion of biscuits and sausage gravy... under ten bucks! Got a huge veggie omelet for $11. Breakfast for two with OJ and coffee and a short stack of delicious blueberry pancakes for me, UNDER $40.
Worth it for $60+.
