Whether you want a somewhat formal dining experience or a casual one, this place does both!
The front entrance is for the more formal experience while the tavern downstairs (enter through the back) is a nice very warm quality cozy casual atmosphere with bar seating, table seating or booths.
They also have an outdoor dining area next to the tavern entrance that is perfect for larger groups who want to have the same quality food as the upstairs but the casual atmosphere of the tavern.
While the food is excellent, I wouldn't consider necessarily consider it "gourmet" fare" although the quality and care they put into their food is well above average.
Their chef(s)? present and produce many delicious dishes, some hearty portions and have something for everyone and often specials both in the food and drink menus.
Their staff work hard to make sure you're satisfied and happy with your meal and truly go to great lengths to ensure your dining experience is great.
The prices are, like all restaurants on the incline but you absolutely get what you pay for. (I ordered a dozen raw oysters and they were fresh, delicious and very reasonably priced at $25)
Cocktails and specialty drinks can get pricey (I like a Grey Goose martini or two myself) but regardless of the top shelf vodka, I wasn't shocked by the sticker price, and it wasn't watered down or swapped for a cheaper vodka that I believe would be noticable to me. I've had it happen, just not here.
Overall I don't generally give five stars to any place unless they really impressed me, so hopefully that carries some weight here. I've been a customer of the Lafayette house for decades and they continue to impress me with their consistency, quality and kindness whether I drop in for a beer and app or sit down for a meal with friends and family.
Note:. Some nights the tavern downstairs have live music, trivia and other entertainment, you might benefit to check before going if you just want a quiet or...

I frequently come here, which is why I was incredibly disappointed in the dinner. I was not going to write a review, however even after the manager tried to make it better... they didn't.
For our 3pm reservation for a 2 hour seating: They were out of short ribs and the Mahi Mahi and were still charging extra for the prime rib even though that was the only other beef option. We ordered the strawberry and candied pecan salad with goat cheese.. but they were out of goat cheese and pecans (which we only found out after getting the salad) We didn't get the rolls with the salad because they ran out and when we finally did get them (1 hour later) the buser tossed the basket on the table with no butter or plates 1.5 hours later we still had no dinner (at a 2 hour seating) We asked to speak with a manager who agreed yes you won't be charged extra for the prime rib considering they ran out of the other options and she would cover our drinks and another round for the wait and lack of everything. We asked why the coffee was extra with dessert and not included (we heard from another table) and she said oh no we will cover that absolutely, we are going to make this right on your check. Coffee comes with no creamer. Asked the waitress for creamer ..10 minutes and cold coffee later we received creamer. Check comes and they charged us for coffee and only took off 1 drink of 3 drinks. We speak to a different manager again and explain we were told drinks were on the house and the coffee. Check comes back again... 1 of 3 drinks was covered and this time so was the coffee.
Incredibly disappointed. Would not return for a high volume event. Should have been handled better...
