The atmosphere is definitely the lure. Its very yellow inside. Big old school orange light up signs with detachable black lettering, no oldies playing. It was a cute place. There were weird mirror portraits of wolves and other things for sale on the walls. I ordered the "Mushroom" Burger. I shelled out a good 13 bucks for a large drink and fries included.
The man working behind the register looked and acted like he had worked there for decades. He had a snarky response when i asked about drink sizes. He sighed and replied in an annoyed tone "we have small, medium, large, and giant." After that when my order was done I picked it up from the front counter myself for the man had nodded to me to get it, i thought it was the norm so i had no problem. I noticed everybody else in the joint was served personally. The drink cup sizes must of hit a sensitive nerve.
The burger was horrendous, i could not finish it. Definitely not a fresh patty, this was a frozen grey patty. There were three mushrooms on the burger and a bunch of dark pink and slimy onions that were "sautéed." Instead of swiss cheese, there is cheddar melted onto it with tomato. This all came inside an onion bun. This burger was not a "Mushroom" burger it was a "Sick Onion" burger.
On the plus side, the place is charming in its old digs, i waited for like 4 minutes and there was nothing wrong with the soda. However, they only accept cash. I didn't finish the burger, too gross. The fries were flaky.
Not worth the price for a...
Read moreI don't care what my family or others say, I love this place with every fiber of my being. The low quality fries, the frozen patties, the questionable toppings, the clumpy weird bacon, the cash only policy, the 500 year old owner who hates everybody, and the old broken down building with rickety booths that squeek super loud.
Everything about this place reminds me of the drive ins I used to go to. Now I'm only 35, but in my childhood those kinds of places were still going. Now they are all closing and it makes me sad.
This place is still going though I don't know how. I eat here whenever possible and my family and friends don't understand and probably never will. I get a certain euphoria that is unmatched when I'm sitting there chowing down on a burger listening to the owner scream about democrats when someone questions the cash only policy or commits the greatest sin of asking for a substitution to anything. Don't like onions on your burger, too bad they're being added, take them off when you eat.
Everything about this place is so wrong but if you're like me and my childhood this place will bring back fond memories. Hurry up and eat here though, the owner could croak at any moment and no one in their right mind would carry on this place as is. It will definitely be demolished and replaced with some crappy bistro or...
Read moreGiant Drive In is a restaurant trying to get by on nostalgia. While the the restaurant is unique due to its throwback to the old drive ins, that’s all it has going for it. In fact, I would argue the place is in dire need of an upgrade. They have a cramped seating area with torn seats and old tables requiring repair. Speaking of, the place could use a tech revamp as it is a cash-only establishment. Also, the wolf decorations gotta go.
Food wise, this place underperformed. The “giant” burgers are alright. The toasted bun was nice but the sogginess of the veggies and condiments made it disintegrate rather quickly. The meat was none other than a 1/4 pound beef patties of the frozen variety and, while they are not bad, there is nothing special about them. Although you could order additional patties, they are definitely not as “giant” as I through they’d be, based on the name. On another note, the fries themselves were nice. However, don’t splurge on the “cheddar” fries. The cheese was bland, old nacho cheese. Definitely not worth the doubling in price.
Speaking of, prices were about average. The service was a bit below; it wouldn’t hurt them to be friendlier. Of the burger joints in the area, there are some that are worth your money. Giant Drive In is really not...
