Another great dive in Chicago. I've been coming here for about 38 years. My favorite is the California burrito with shredded beef. Basically it's a beef roast and one of the most flavorful burritos you'll ever have. It's just the egg short of a machaca burrito. Otherwise it's identical. The salsa is not the best, It has a burnt flavor to it which can be a little bit upsetting because it's roasted but they seem to burn it every time. And I've been coming here for so long but the service has never really been that friendly or great. If they want to do something they will leave the front and make you wait for a while and there will be a line stacking up and they still don't come to the front. That doesn't make sense and that's not good customer service. You can always do your paperwork later. But your customers might walk out if they don't know the place and the quality of the food. The chips are excellent. I just wish they had a better salsa. They could do it, that's for certain and then it would be a top-notch place all...
Read moreThis place is located on the Northside so I already don't expect much but my hopes went up a little when I saw that the dudes running the grills and front lines are Mexicans. But I could see they were tired and used to catering to people who like cheese and lettuce and tomato in their food.
I asked them not to put cheese on lengua, steak, nor al pastor taco. I said "with everything" on each of the distinct tacos. Well, they literally put sour cream, lettuce, and tomato in all the tacos. The al pastor taco only typically is prepared with cilantro and onions. They had absolutely none of that. The others, I can pass up but I was kind of disappointed that even though I spoke to them in Spanish, the tacos did not come topped with what they're typically prepared in any Mexican restaurant. It's fine, really. Just know that if you're going to try them out, the tacos are catered to very Americanized palates; namely, adding cheese, sour cream, lettuce and tomato to every taco, regardless of the type of protein...
Read moreIts open late, so that gets it serious stars right there. I didn't see this famous bathroom art, unless the other reviewers were referring to the door handle in the restroom, which was indeed ornate. But the restroom was clean, which I think of as a good indicator of restaurant cleanliness. The staff was friendly. It's not McDonald's fast, but I thought it was fast enough. They have lots of options on the menu, both in types of food and fillings. They have junior burritos, which is perfect for a small meal, and you're not stuck with a messy leftover half of a burrito to manage, so that's excellent. The California burrito was what I'm used to, with rice, beans, steak and onions. Most of the other burritos didn't include rice or beans. The tortillas were grilled and nice and crispy on the outside. There's a big seating space (two rooms, actually), and it's a comfortable late-night beacon on Lincoln. I didn't drive, but it seemed like there'd be lots of street...
