This review has been a long time coming! Having been born and raised in Germany, Doners were an integral part of my daily life. If you've ever had the pleasure of sampling one in Germany, you'll undoubtedly understand the depth of flavor and satisfaction they provide. I've been eagerly urging all my friends here in the US to give Doners a try, assuring them that once they do, they'll find themselves craving it regularly. But, let's be clear, I'm talking about the authentic German-style Doner experience here!
So, when I stumbled upon Doner 97, I knew I had to pay them a visit. I even took the extra step of calling ahead, emphasizing my background as an Afro German with a deep-rooted knowledge of what constitutes a genuine Doner. While the person who answered the phone exuded confidence, I couldn't help but maintain a level of skepticism. Nonetheless, despite residing in the Loop, I was willing to make the trek to Lakeview, fully aware of the risk of potential disappointment.
However, as soon as I stepped foot inside Doner 97, I was instantly transported back to the bustling streets of Germany, surrounded by the aroma of sizzling meats and fresh bread. And let me tell you, from the very first bite, everything was absolutely on point. This was the real deal – the Doner experience I remembered from my childhood. Any minor adjustments I deemed necessary, I promptly shared with the owner, who displayed an unparalleled level of receptiveness and gratitude. It's truly a rarity to encounter an owner so genuinely open to feedback, especially from a stranger!
In my opinion, this embodies the quintessential European hospitality and attitude that I hold dear. Doner 97 truly deserves more recognition for the exceptional culinary experience they offer right here in Chicago. They're not just making food; they're crafting an experience that transcends mere sustenance. So, if you happen to find yourself in the vicinity, I implore you to treat yourself to a Doner from Doner 97. Trust me; you won't regret it. Bravo, Doner 97! Since my initial visit, I've already found myself placing two additional delivery orders, and I have no intention of stopping...
Read moreI stopped by on a lunch break with a colleague and ordered two mixed Doner sandwiches (chicken with lamb&beef), a side of fries and Kumpir97 (loaded baked potato) to split. First thing first, the portions are LARGE, well worth it.
The meat was perfectly cooked, juicy with crisped edges just how I like it! The sandwich was packed with meat, lettuce, tomato, and two delicious house sauces (garlic and red pepper). Worried the red pepper sauce was spicy but I gave it a shot. It was more of a roasted red pepper sauce which complimented the meat perfectly! The garlic sauce was to die for, I had to order an extra side because I couldn’t get enough! The bread was this perfectly toasted pocket with an airy inside that was not too thick and held everything together without breaking at all! I hate when sandwiches or wraps of any kind fall apart.
The fries were some of the best I’ve ever had, flaky outside, fluffy inside and seasoned to perfection!
The Kumpir97 was delicious! The inside of the potato is blended with cheese before topped with anything. I wanted to try this one for the authenticity and it did not disappoint! They have a build your own option which I will definitely be back for - where else can you get a baked potato quickly and of good quality? TIP: add the garlic sauce to the Kumpir97, you won’t regret it!
I am excited to go back and try their Doner bowl with bulgar (a delicious and healthier rice substitute I often use at home).
Cherry on top of the whole experience was meeting the owners and how friendly they were! So genuine and really appreciative of the support and feedback. Support small businesses and shop (or eat) local!
I ate a TON and still felt light as a feather leaving there - not weighed down, ready for a nao like most quick bite shops.
10/10 experience and 100% guaranteed this will become my...
Read moreSo, I have been walking by this place for months, and I have always wanted to try it. Today was the day! I just wanted to get lunch and take it home. I thought the bowl was pricey, at $16.99, so I got the sandwich for $13.99. HOLY COW! I was seriously blown away. There was so much meat on the sandwich. How did these guys stay in business? The lamb was juicy and tender, and absolutely perfect. All of the ingredients, including the bread, were top-notch. So, it might be a dollar more expensive than the place down the street, but it is 100% worth it. If you are in the neighborhood, you must stop! I’m sorry I took a photo of a half eaten sandwich, but I wanted to show you that it is chock full of...
