I went for the first time today and the shop was empty. We had never been so the gentleman who took our order directed us to the register and then she put our drinks out a several feet down from the register, through a window. At that point another peson came in to order and was standing at the register. Instead of asking us to move, the cashier told the perople they had to wait and just stared at us. At that point, another barista told us to move over by the trash to put the sugar in. After doing that, I put sugar in and then went to taste it. To do this, I pulled my mask down,, tasted and as I was adding more sugar, the same barista said- put your mask on! It had been off for maybe 10-20 seconds while I tasted the coffee. I felt shocked that she yelled at me when I am under the impression that you can drink in a restaurant with your mask down. I am a very firm mask wearer and very carefully follow the rules. It was uncomfortable to be reprimanded when I was standing far away from people and tasting my drink and I didn't realize if this was or was not allowed. We wanted to support this business and try it out but it was a very rude experience. If I did break the rule by tasting my drink when I added sugar, she could have politely asked me to keep my mask on and let me know I could not taste it in the store, not yelled in front of other customers in a super rude way. The coffee was great but the experience left me feeling like I...
Read moreAlthough the prices at La Colombe already include tax, it's really expensive ($3.50 for a 12-ounce Americano is a lot, and so is $4.50 for an almond croissant.) However, there are several redeeming qualities to this coffee shop (and those at the other locations): The coffee is excellent. The pastries are baked fresh every morning and are very good as well, but they cannot reheat them since (as they wrote me following my inquiry as to why they do not reheat their pastries) due to limited space in the cafe and certain Chicago health ordinances they are not allowed to have an oven. (This, actually, is proof that they do not use microwaves in the coffee shop, which is, in my opinion, a good thing.) As for their customer service, I always find it to be accommodating and personable. This location has an immense room although many of the tables have low stools without a backrest, so be aware that if the other seats are taken, your comfort levels might be diminished. As in the other locations, cold plain/sparkling water is freely available. The decor is rather stark here and as a result some people might find it to be less than inviting, but all in all, I find it to be comfortable enough and a pleasant environment to sip my expensive cup...
Read moreI enjoy the oat iced lattes and hot drip coffee. I think the customer service leaves quite a bit to be desired (it used to be better), some of the male staff can be quite cold in their attitude.
I recently asked what comes in a drink that they just recently started offering, and the male barista with a man bun/ponytail looked at me like I asked what comes in water, like it was a ridiculous question. I also saw this attitude weeks prior when another person who was much more unfamiliar with coffee asked what was a latte, they were also responded with the same tone. I felt bad for them because not everyone who comes into La Colombe knows about different coffee drinks, although it might seem unbelievable to the staff who deal with these drinks daily.
From the customer's perspective, if I am about to pay $8-9 for a drink, it's better that I ask what comes in it rather than decide I don't like it and waste it and ask for it to be remade.
The drinks are also not always made the same, depending on the barista. Once I asked for more of a specific flavor that I paid for and was not present in my drink, one of the male baristas told me to put more simple syrup if I wanted it to be sweeter, which is not what I wanted and not what...
