If you look at my other reviews, you'll see that it's rare for me to give out a 2 star or a 1 star review. I was on the verge of giving Milly's a single star. I didn't, but my pizza experience probably deserved just a single star.
I was really expecting to give Milly's 5 stars based on everything I had heard. I expected a high level of quality control because they were limiting the number of pizzas they were making and were seemingly organized to where I had to order a week in advance.
I thought about this pizza all week in anticipation... and that anticipation was met with utter disappointment.
For a $36 pizza that I preordered A WEEK in advance...
Top 15 in the country? That pizza wasn't even top 10 in WestTown.
Our pizza was pretty light on sauce and toppings and had onions on it. Not an ingredient we ordered. We got an ingredient we didn't want and barely any of the four ingredients that we actually did order.
Text message 30 minutes before said that it would let me know when the pizza was ready. I walked in 5 minutes early hoping to grab the pie as it was coming out of the oven and to my dismay my pizza had been sitting for at least 5-10 min as the box was on the shelf and when I picked it up, it was barely warm. Also, the text message pinged after I picked up the pizza! (I now know that it's automated because it pinged at exactly 7:15 saying the pizza was ready (ironically right while I was pulling into my garage), 7:15 was my scheduled pickup time, not when it was actually ready.
What a joke. By the time I got home (5 minutes away) my pizza was soggy (in all likelyhood it was probably already dying sitting on the shelf (not a heated pizza storage shelf by the way - just a shelf), bottom crust was steamed and the pizza was luke warm at best and was cut in two halves and put into two medium pizza boxes because they ran out of large boxes.
Not enough sauce on the pizza, but crust was light and would have been great if it hadn't have sat on the shelf waiting for me for 10+ minutes getting steamed in the box (my guess as the boxes were barely warm when I picked them up).
They get 2 stars only because the edge crust was delicious with the crunchy burnt cheese.
This is clearly a case of a pizza place that is not able to keep up with demand and the quality is suffering. If you do order, arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time and hopefully, you'll get a piping hot pizza that isn't a...
Read moreIn a city like Chicago, where we are spoiled by food options, it is easy to forget that cuisine is an art, not merely a means to an end. When a dish is able to activate every sense and unite them all in one singular moment of harmonious ecstacy that seems to last forever, you know you're either soon to wake from a cruel dream or you have in fact happened upon a gem. Upon setting my eye on the pie, it was clear that the ingredients were fresh. The colors were incredibly vivid and enticing.
Chicago, however, is not a city without its smoke and mirrors. Keeping this in mind, I checked my inner outburst endeavoring to reserve judgement only after I'd tasted it. The crust is without a doubt exceptional. Light, fluffy, crispy, AND juicy. Don't give me that dense, dry dough or 'artisanal' burnt cracker garbage.
The sauce was not overly sweet and had a good amount of acidity--enough to cut through and not get lost in the cheese and toppings but not overpowering. The herbs reminded me of NY style sauce. A perfect vehicle. The cheese was slightly chewy which I love and had a decent milky taste to it.
The peppers were fresh, slightly sweet, and had a lovely color to them. I was initially concerned about the red onions because I do not like the way they linger in your mouth for hours after a meal. These red onions were cooked perfectly. They were sweet and mild as they should be in this case. The pepperoni and sausage were exquisite... Not burnt afterimages of their former selves. The olives, spinach, and fresh mozzarella..just delicious.
You can literally feel the intention that went into crafting this beautiful pizza in every bite. For me, it is the near perfect marriage of deep dish and pan pizza, both favorites of mine. Better than Pequod's. Of that, there is no question. Though to bring such comparisons into the conversation is a vulgar exercise in futility.....but I mean, it's Chicago. Pizza hills must be erected and died upon. I cannot deny myself the opportunity to add to the choir my own voice 👄.
All pomp and circumstance aside, Milly's is some damned good pizza and worth a visit. Definitely preorder as they sell out quickly. Can't wait to go back and try all of the other combinations! Thank you Robert Maleski and staff!...
Read moreWhile perusing an article on this establishment, it sounded interesting, so I thought I'd investigate. Since I'm still looking for a decent pizzeria. On the north side since I moved here ten years ago. I have to go back. To the far northwest side to get a decent pizza now and then. Giordanos used to be great in the seventies, but since they franchised, they went downhill. Not as good. Do doordash unos occasionally when I treat myself, i'm lazy. THOSE ARE PIZZAS!!!!!!
From the experiences that I have investigated I don't think I would ever even think about trying this place.
Just from the pictures alone. The crust always looks "burnt" (black), veggies look uncooked, and way too much plain crust around the circumference. Considering the price of the toppings Which From the menu, are totally outrageous, especially for the toppings when shown on the pictures it's even worse.
I have managed restaurants and restaurant kitchens. Two of them were popular Italiano. I have a review listed. On one of my favorites on the NW side.
" Limited number of pizzas per day?"... freshly made dough Does keep, should be using a "Starter" batch anyway... Sounds like this guy doesn't know what he's doing. On the job training I guess.
I noticed all the apologies he has made online. Promising to make good. If he didn't make so many mistakes He wouldn't have to give away so much free food. And maybe make a profit and lower his prices. If you post hours of operation online, people depend on that, that's contractual..... Good way to p* people off and lose customers especially potential customers.
I have never been to this establishment. Have no connection with any restaurants, except as a customer. Just thought I'd throw in my observations. From information, I've gathered reviews articles Millie's website menu..... Still looking for a decent pizzeria. In the...
