California Sushi & Teriyaki #8--Lakewood — Restaurant in Lakewood

Formerly the location of Pioneer Chicken, then a Chinese fast food place, California Sushi & Teriyaki serves fast Japanese food in the city of Lakewood. I was looking for lunch that was cool in temperature on a warm Saturday in April, so sushi was the first thing that popped into my mind. Yasai Japanese Grill is my usual go-to fast sushi place, but I wanted to venture out and try something different. Not to mention have another business to review. Up comes California Sushi & Teriyaki to the plate.

Arriving inside, I was greeted by a nice lady taking orders. Perusing the menu items on display, I decided upon the super maki special.

Super maki special- 5 pieces crunch roll, 5 pieces California roll & 5 pieces spicy tuna roll. The rolls were about average size, rolled nicely as to not fall apart when dipped in soy sauce. Not bad, but nothing extraordinary.

Unfortunately, the nigiri & rolls come by themselves. Miso soup & edamame aren't included. Which, to me, is a real bummer, because other places do offer bonus items to go with sushi.

Besides sushi, California Sushi & Teriyaki has, you guessed it, teriyaki. I checked out the teriyaki plates & bowls and they seemed like a good amount of food for the price. The restaurant also has udon soup that is supposed to be pretty good, from what I hear.

A fair amount of seating inside. Expect the same amount of seats as you'd find at a Popeye's. Service was good. The woman working the register let me use the sole restroom in the kitchen.

Parking is in a private lot, shared by Salon Allure, an orthodontist, McDonald's and other businesses.

For sushi, I don't think California Sushi & Teriyaki would be my first bet. While the Super maki special served it's purpose, not having soup, salad and/or edamame to go with it left me disappointed. The teriyaki & udon, on the other hand, look like they might entice me to try another visit here. I live really closeby, and the chewy bite of udon noodles is something I'm mighty looking forward to. First timer here! We walked in and it was super cute, they have action figures and were SOLD OUT of Labubu's... So bummed, but who cares LOL. Lets talk about the ambiance. Its very welcoming and lots of space for you to sit and eat or take out. Your choice, its the booth for us! Super comfy!!

The Menu is clear as day! Everything has a picture and if your blind like me, they offer paper menus so you can see up close and personal! I must say its very affordable for a family of 6. We are a big back family, so it can feed all of us very nicely!! Don't judge!

We ended up ordering 3 Beef bowls, no veggies with extra rice, 1 Salmon Box, 6 gyoza, 10 shrimp crunch rolls. From the seasoning to the cooking, everything was DELICIOUS!! NO COMPLAINTS HERE!! TRY EVERYTHING!! All of our food was cooked to our liking, nothing was raw, undercooked, or burnt! Winner winner for us! AGAIN, JUST TRY EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING!! You wont be disappointed!!! #FACTS

Service from the cashier was amazing. I asked her a few questions of what she liked and what she would ordered. She told us to try the "BOX" because it has a little bit of everything. She was RIGHT, we enjoyed that bad boy!!

If you decide to try any of the drinks in the cooler, go for the grape! We ended up trying the Thai Tea with boba, and it was refreshing! Everything about this establishment was CLUTCH for us! They offer catering as well for those of US who don't want to cook hehehehe...

Well, for a fast food place, they were rather pricey and the wait was rather long about 20 minutes, we were the only ones there inside. I saw a few to go orders sitting there . And then I asked for a cup of ice and the person who handles the orders said they do not have any ice. I was kind of upset about that and I told my friend waiting who was waiting for our orders, that i would wait in car and as I was walking to exit out the door I said, " YOU CHARGE HIGH PRICES AND CANNOT GIVE ME A CUP OF ICE!??" COMPARABLE TO RESTAURANT PRICES. AND THEN TO TOP IT OFF NO SAUCES WERE GIVEN TO GO, AND NO FORKS OR SPOONS TO EAT WITH. NO CHOPSTICKS WERE EVEN GIVEN WHICH WE REALLY DO NOT LIKE TO EAT WITH. NOT USE TO THEM. WHAT? NO NAPKINS? FOR SHAME ON THEM. NO GO NO MORE.

TO ADD: HOW COME ALL THE OTHER FAST FOOD PLACES GIVE US CONDIMENTS AND UTENSILS, AND YOURS CANNOT GIVE THEM ? THE LAW STATES "ONLY IF YOU REQUEST THEM," AND WE DO IF NONE WITH OUR ORDER. :) BUT EVEN SO, I FORGOT TO MENTION. THERE WAS ONLY TERIYAKI SAUCE ON TOP OF THE CHICKEN ON TOP OF BOWL. BUT UNDERNEATH THAT THE BOWL HAD NO SAUCE, OR MUCH FLAVOR AND RATHER DRY. I BOUGHT SOME SAUCE TO HELP OUT THE BOWL AND IT TASTED MUCH BETTER. THE CHICKEN BOWL SEEMED KIND OF LIKE A SALAD TO ME.
