A typical Filipino turo-turo restaurant (meaning point-point a la Panda Express), Kainan Sa Kanto is a hole in the wall serving up the usual culinary comfort food of the PI.
After browsing the daily selections, I ordered a 2-item combo with lechon kawali & dinuguan Lechon kawali - Ginormous, thick chunks of fatty pork. Bring it on, baby! With the crispy skin, unctuous fat & tender meat, the lechon delivered. A healthy dip in Mang Tomas All Purpose sauce or vinegar with garlic & chili, and it's on & cracking.
Dinuguan - aka chocolate meat, a pork blood stew, I was disappointed that the usual tender cuts of the pig head weren't used to make this. No ears, snout & other goodies for me to savor. Still, it wasn't bad, but not the dinuguan I was hoping for.
Other dishes available included sisig & whole tilapia. The sisig didn't look very appetizing, which resulted in me not picking it for my combo. I had to ask for the complimentary soup with my order, which was sinigang made with pompano. Kainan Sa Kanto is a popular catering option from what I've heard from others.
Minimal seating inside, with various bagged goods for sale on the left of the restaurant. The lady working the counter was friendly, making my to-go combo order quick & easy. A small parking lot shared with other businesses is available if you can find a spot within it.
Kainan Sa Kanto offers decent Filipino food when you're in the mood for fatty, salty, starchy gratification. Not one of my most favorite spots in the general area, Kainan Sa Kanto is a respectable option if you're hungry & happen to be...
Read moreDon't be scared off by the location in the corner spot of a small strip mall and unassuming interior. Selection of canned goods, frozen goods and desserts, variety of Filipino desserts. Also large selection of their prepared foods. I had tocino and 2 large sticks of pork bbq My Filipina wife had Bangus and young jack fruit prepared with coconut milk. We have fridge in our hotel room so we also got a small container of squash and green bean veggie mix. We also got a bag of Pan de Coco (bun with chocolate inside). All food we tried was so Lami/Masarap. We have been touring Canada and USA for 5+ weeks and were both missing Filipino food. KAINAN SA KANTO is a must try if you are living or visiting the Long Beach California area. While we were there 3 separate Filipina locals came and also got large orders - that is a good sign. The man who took our order was so friendly and he had 3 hard working people cooking behind him. He wished us a good rest of our holiday and hoped we would return next time in LA/Long Beach - we will for sure. Highly recommend this food and the portions are so big we each took out half of our order. The biggest problem is so many tasty choices...

The star of the show here is definitely the lechon. The crispy skin gives way to perfectly tender meat, making it an absolute must-try. Every bite is a flavor explosion!
They have a great selection of other dishes too. The pancit was another favorite, with a savory and satisfying taste. The chicken adobo was classically delicious, and the bbq skewers offered a delightful sweet and salty balance.
For the more adventurous eaters, I recommend trying the cow tripe with peanut sauce kari kari. It was surprisingly tasty and well-prepared.
No Filipino meal is complete without dessert, and Kainan Sa Kanto doesn't disappoint. Their turon, those amazing sweet egg rolls filled with plantains, are simply divine. And to cool off after a satisfying meal, their halo halo is the perfect way to end your visit.
Overall, Kainan Sa Kanto is a fantastic restaurant that offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere along with incredible homemade Filipino food. I highly recommend...
