Deputy Dawgz & Smash Burgers — Restaurant in Las Cruces

A little disappointed but was excited to try a local food joint. I I will say the people were super nice. We got the New Mexico loaded Fries which were pretty good but lacked toppings, they looked better before I stirred them up but I was trying to find the beans …there were very few and the toppings were only on the top layer leaving a bunch of plain fries … for the price I would’ve liked to see a lot more toppings, especially beans. I got the #8 smash burger/the hangover…so excited to try something new but sad to see 2 little pieces of bacon, my grilled onions were burnt to thin black slivers and I wish there had been maple syrup on it as advertised I craved the sweet and savory so waited to finish until I got home and put some maple syrup on and will say the combo is great but their description sounded better than it was actually served. . My husband got the #7smash burger which was good. I will say the portion size of the burgers and fries was great. I will go back because we all have off days in the kitchen. Support local. Hope they get their brick and mortar ready soon because the summers are hot… come on Landlord… take care of your tenants so the can open the doors and surely fill...

This was my first time trying Deputy Dawgs and Holy Moly what a fabulous experience ! Upon arrival, There is really colorful and fun graffiti art for your eyes to feast on through out the building . We walked up and was promptly greeted by both Owner and employee which made us feel like our money being spent there is valued.

The menu was unique for Las Cruces and all the options sounded good . We couldn’t decide but ended up choosing the Wyatt Combo and The California Burger Combo . Which ironically, the people ahead of us ordered the same thing and we chuckled about it .

Now this is where it gets good . I am a foodie , and I have traveled a lot and have had some pretty amazing food experiences in my lifetime . It has been far and few in between since I have been wowed locally. BUT … this burger was outstanding, standing ovation , bravo worthy ! Each bite was romance in my mouth and for the next 30 min , my stomach and my aura were in such a positive place .

During my recent visit, I ordered a plain smash burger with cheese, grilled onions, and a side of fries. Let me start with the fries: I was genuinely impressed by the cut they use—crispy, golden, and well-seasoned. They also offer a “deputy sauce” for dipping, which leans on the sweeter side. Personally, I would have appreciated an additional sauce option, maybe something more savory or with a bit more salt, to create a better balance. Still, the fries themselves were a highlight and definitely earned points in my book.

As for the burger, I found it to be a bit of a letdown. While the texture was perfect for a smash burger, the patty was unfortunately quite dry and lacked flavor. It seemed like it may have been pressed a little too much on the grill, which dried out the meat. That was disappointing, as I was hoping for a juicier, more flavorful bite.

Despite this, I’m willing to give them another shot—everyone has an off day, and I’m curious to see if my next experience will be better. I’ll definitely be back to see if...
