I had my first experience with el jacalito today and it was very disappointing. I had to order inside because no one said a word to me after 5 minutes of waiting in the drive thru. I ordered a potato, egg, bacon, and green chile burrito to go. In the 3 minutes it took me to get home the lower half of the paper bag I had received my food in was soaked in grease because my burrito wasn't wrapped correctly. This made it hard to eat and revealed the contents of my burrito. There was a single small piece of bacon, what looked like 1 eggs worth of scrambled egg, no green chile, and the rest was potato. This burrito was pretty damn big, big enough that I could barely hold it with one hand, and I was still able to take 4 bites without tasting anything but tortilla and potato. I ended up just picking out the egg and bacon and throwing away the rest because the tortilla was slimy with grease and the potatoes were bland. I basically payed 4$ for hash browns wrapped in a tortilla. Of all the great restaurants I've been to in las cruces this one is probably the worst and I will not be going...
Read moreOrdered a lunch combo (2 cheese enchiladas, beef taco, split portion of red sauced pork with green sauced pork, rice & beans) near closing, my dinner guest got the Gordita platter (3 different meat on 3 large slider sized pieces of Mexican bread). Both of us are more than happy to return to try the burgers that the cooks revommeded. I was confused with menu description of combo platter, fearing 2 plain cheese enchiladas yet was pleased to find the spiced and sauced pork in abundance on the plate to the side of the enchiladas. Taco was ground beef/lettuce/tomato/ and I think cheese Apologies, welded it down so fast forgot to look or get pictures. The homemade chips were good and fresh, not salted, the same as green sauce, which we added a quick sprinkle of salt to which i feel helped. The Gorditas looked great, my guest was pleased and well versed in cultural food, and full after eating 2-saving the third for lunch. Considering the complexity of my combo platter, I feel the service was fast. Very polite and responsive employees. Dinner/tip was $15 and...
Read moreMy neighbor kept raving about this place so my friend and I decided to try it out today. WOW! What a pleasant surprise awaited us in this small A-framed restaurant. LasCruces has a g'zillion tex-mex spots in competition. My particular way to judge them is by comparing their chili rellenos. El Jacalito's rellenos are THE BEST I've eaten in town. I could tell they were cooked to order when the outside of the relleno was slightly crisp yielding a soft creamy cheese inside. Both the red and green sauces were very flavorful and definitely homemade. The rice and beans sides---often a tasteless filler in other restaurants'--- were very nicely seasoned and attractively plated. Juan was my host today and he made sure throughout the meal that my friend and I didn't lack anything. One could tell that this was a popular place for many returning customers. Busy but worth any wait. I definitely will make this my place to go when I crave tex-mex food. Love that they have a...
