Whether I order on the phone or in Eatstreet, the order is, too often, wrong or neglected in some way. You can (frequently) expect something as small as not getting the bbq sauce you asked for (if you don't like sweet because of the extra sugar, or if you prefer hot - it should matter) even if you've written out the request, don't expect attention to be paid. The brisket is almost always tough (as far as brisket goes), I get the chicken breast but my husband changed to burnt ends because of the tough, flavorless brisket. We have had so many issues, we have tried to talk to them before leaving a review. After two years of ordering and this past year, ordering about once a week (I meal prep most every other night because we both work alot), on my night off during a weekday, BBQ is a great way to get protein and a small portion of carbs (don't ask to sub a small salad.- even if you want just lettuce - because it's a big deal.) It's a local business, so I've tried to avoid leave a review as to not influence others before they try it, however, this is a VERY honest review after a couple of years of regular ordering. We are excellent customers, but if they messed up and you need it fixed, be prepared to hear the manager say "I'm sorry.." "...But maybe (insert passed blame, something you could.have done differently how it may have been your mistake)." After many order mess-ups, food left out, (a few specific) wait staff with terribly careless, entitled attitudes and some with GREAT attitudes, and a couple who have apologised to US for the managers blaming style mistake resolutions, it's time to give an honest review. I not only order with my husband (often!!) but also with my lab partner who (loves) bbq and has only been in town for about a year, he came from North Carolina and was massively disappointed. I encouraged him to give it a chance."they just have some bad days" I said. The truth is, aside from Hog Wild (excellent brisket, but alot of everything else tastes pre-made - the sides and whatnot - I digress) The last experience, it was late, I just got home from my shift at the hospital (I'm a laboratory scientist - I've published peer reviewed papers and when I receive criticism, I have to take it seriously, edit, and do better. If I make a mistake on a written request, someone could become (more so) critically ill, or worse, loss of life due to human error. I'm not saying the job is easy for them, all jobs have their difficulties. When we continuously overlook requests or instructions and then make no effort to amend the issue, it's likely to just continue. I ordered a side for my hungry toddler, it wasn't included. I got the same "well, I'm sorry. You know their is a chance he dropped it (???) Or it fell out in the car. It's poor service when, ahead of time, you double where you before you call because you know manager will try and push the blame on you. Needless to say, nothing was delivered back and my son ate a small amount of hummus and went to bed. In short, if you want mediocre brisket, inaccurate orders, and a manager incapable of taking responsibility and trying to improve - this is the place for you. It's frustrating, because they could be really great more effort went into some of their menu items and alot more care for how they handle errors, and all around more kindness. After a couple of years though, at least on my experience, I can expect to just get what you get, regardless that you're a...
Read moreI've had Bigg's catering a whole bunch after spending four years at KU. But I recently dined in for the first time and I had a great experience. Here is what I ordered:
Bigg Margarita (1.99 on Tuesdays) Stuffed Jalapenos Pulled Pork Platter with Baked Beans and House Chips
First thing you should know is that I was dining in alone. The amount of food I ordered was easily good for 2 people. Anyways, everything started out with great service. Greeted at the door, sat down in the Bar Lounge, and was quickly greeted by the bartender and a menu.
The margarita was about what you would expect for a college-town drink special. The stuffed jalapenos however were definitely hand made in house. One order got me two skewers of 3 huge jalapeno poppers stuffed with cream cheese, cheddar, and chicken, dipped in a country batter (think country fried steak) and fried to a crispy gold. They were served with two sauces: BBQ Ranch which seemed to be a mixture of buttermilk ranch and their house sauce, and a Sweet Thai Chili sauce. Both complimented the poppers very well. Overall, the poppers were very good but be warned, they were also VERY spicy.
On to the main dish. My platter came as you would expect from a serious BBQ joint: the meat piled high on two pieces of toast, the beans overflowing from their bowl, and the chips crispy. While I waited for my food, the bartender gave me a small plate of fries so that I could test each sauce (regular, hot, sweet). +1 for service. I ended up mixing the sweet and hot together which made for a very delicious pulled pork. The pork had a great flavor that you know can only come from a long smoky process. It was moist and tender and everything you want in pulled pork.
Like I said, Bigg's also caters and they do a great job at that. But dining in is definitely a good experience on its own. They have great daily specials and have walls lined with HD televisions for your viewing pleasure. If you are in Lawrence or in the area, Bigg's is a must try...
Read moreMy wife and I are huge BBQ fans. We’ve tried all of the amazing spots in KC and love the variety. Today we stopped into Bigg’s BBQ for the first time for lunch and we immediately fell in love with the place. It was before the lunch crowd so we beat the crowd. We were immediately seated by Doug, the owner. I would have never guessed that Doug is the owner had his picture not been in the front entry. He was polite and seemed to genuinely care about our dining experience. The atmosphere was nice. Everything was neat and clean. Even the background music was right on the spot. Our server, Arthur, was prompt and courteous. He gave us plenty of time and never rushed us. When we did make a decision, he was thorough and clear in his questions. While we were waiting for our meals, he even provided us with a small complementary sample of their amazing house fries. My wife had the burnt ends and pulled pork, cheesy corn bake, and BBQ beans. I had 3 bones of ribs, burnt ends, pulled pork, cheesy corn bake, and fried okra. We both had iced tea for drinks. Everything was perfect. I don’t use sauce (didn’t need it) but my wife said it was great and we would be getting some next time we come in. We both instantly fell for the Bigg’s Carolina Vinegar Sauce (“Better as it’s made in Kansas”). A unique flavor that would complement a variety of foods. If you factor in that we walked away with a full meal of leftovers (and a full bottle of Bigg’s Carolina Vinegar Sauce) by my math we spent less than $10.00 per meal. You can’t do fast food for that these days. The bottom line is that Bigg’s BBQ is a family-oriented restaurant run by a family (we met Doug, his wife, and his son) that gives you great portions of delicious food for a fair price. Don’t let the VERY few negative comments sway you. This is a 5-star BBQ place...
