Holcom Park Recreation Center — Attraction in Lawrence

I dig this place. Say what you will about it but I've experienced rec centers or similar establishments in a lot of different places. Holcom Park Recreation Center is by far one of the best. Its clean...I know some will not agree with me. But keep in mind that a lot of people these days will never be happy with a given situation anywhere! Also remember that this is a place completely open to the general public. Lol its fairly difficult to keep a place spotless when folks from all walks of life and varying ideas of who is responsible for a person's mess. Anyway, the staff all seem to be pretty cool and friendly. The grounds are well maintained as well and too and also. There will always be some things that could use improvement anywhere you go. So be happy with what you have available Lawrence! Be grateful for this place existing and is open for any and almost all. Ya know, within reason. Indoor: basketball court(s), small weight room, racquetball court (reservations suggested but not necessary if not being used). One large room that can be divided into two rooms by sliding curtain that can be reserved for functions. Outside:two racquetball/handball courts, tennis courts, 4 large baseball fields, pitching/batting tent structures, 2 sand volleyball pits, large pavilion with picnic tables (can be reserved for a fee), playground jungle gym equipment with slides, several swings including infant/toddler safe swings. Large grass areas. Outdoor drinking fountains...

I loved bringing the kids here when they were younger and I lived in Lawrence. There was always something fun for them to do inside and out. They loved this community center! When I move back this summer I plan to make use of their facilities again with their little cousins. I love the outdoor playgrounds, the open fields and the baseball diamonds. When the weather is bad the kids would play air hockey and racquetball in the gym. It's one of Lawrence's gems that everyone should take...
