The Mattress Hub Lawrence, KS — Hotel in Lawrence

I have been writing this review in my head for weeks. Mostly in the middle of the night as I am not sleeping. My husband and I had been waiting 5 years to get a new mattress. Ours was 10 years old and was pretty bad. We couldn't afford a new one until recently. I had been complaining for years! Well my experience with this new mattress is 50x worse than that old 10 year mattress. In fact, I wish I had it back. We went to the store and spent about 40 min browsing and talking to the salesman. He knew I was a side sleeper. He knew I preferred a softer mattress. My husband on the other hand said he wanted a firm. The salesman pointed out one within our price point. It was 5 star mattress apparently an off brand of Serta? He had us lay on it and told us "It is a little bit of both. It is not a TRUE firm". I thought that it was our best bet to compromise and my husband and I to be happy. The salesman said something that stuck with me even now 30 HORRIBLE nights later. He said "If you are a side sleeper you will NEVER be happy on a firm mattress" . He said that to me. Knowing I am ONLY a side sleeper. This little tidbit is important as my husband is not a side sleeper. He can sleep on anything. Rock, soft, etc. But as a side sleeper, my whole body aches on a firm mattress. When we went to check out he was filling out the form and asked a co worker "Oh do we have any of the FIRM 5 star kings in stock" by which I walk up and go "WAIT, FIRM, what do you mean firm????" and he replied again, "Oh this is not a true firm, that's just product name of it, it is more softer than a true firm it isn't as tightly woven" etc etc. So I felt reassured and my husband completed the purchase. We waited a week to receive from the warehouse. They brought in the mattress and I waited until the 2 delivery man left and quickly went to lay on it. BAM, ROCK HARD. SOLID STONE... I instantly said, "What the heck? this is a rock, it has no give, no bounce. NONE." I had purchased a mattress topper to soften it prior I put it on. It hasn't helped. Started sleeping on it and every night waking up 2-3x a night, after 3 days the pain was unbearable. Now 30 nights later My whole body hurts. My back hurts, my neck hurts, my shoulders hurt. I toss and turn and I don't want to go back to bed. I think "Gosh wonder if I will get any sleep tonight". This is the hardest mattress I have ever slept on. Harder than my dad's cheap $300 guest mattress he bought me, harder than the 30 year old mattress my mom has in her guest room. It is probably 1 step up above the floor. This mattress is ruining my days because it ruins my nights. I am tired, I hurt all over and I am ticked off. I called the Store about 2 weeks ago and was told "There is nothing I can do, it won't even let me accept a return until day 45. My boss is at an expo this weekend and I will try to ask but they are firing people for working around the system to get them returned earlier than this." Ok So here I am literally counting down the days. I 100% blame the salesman. Had I known this mattress was this firm I would have NEVER agreed to it. After calling and complaining and asking him why the showroom model was no where near this firm he says, "Oh the showroom mattress is 2 years old' by which I say, "That should be disclosed if a mattress will take TWO years to soften then I DON'T WANT IT!!!!!!!!!" And there is no way you can say a 2 year old show room mattress gets as much wear as a mattress slept on by 2 adults for 8 hrs a night. I do not know why the showroom was softer but it was that and the salesman assuring me it was not a true FIRM that caused me to say, "Ok". here I am at nearly midnight and basically don't want to go to bed. When my wife and I decided it was time to get a new mattress, we knew there were two stores on Iowa Street in Lawrence that sold the Postur-Pedic we were looking for. Mattress Hub and the other place. We visited Mattress Hub first. We were treated well and provided printed information about the set-up we wanted with all prices clearly stated. After advising we would check the competition down the road, we were thanked for visiting and sent on our way. The other store, well, we were greeted politely, but the manager advised she needed to finish something and left us alone for a bit. Then, when we explained what we wanted, she got confused and started pricing the wrong bed. Then, she said she had to check the computer to get pricing. While she "checked" she kept demanding more personal information about my wife and me. When all was said and done, and we had been standing around for 10 minutes waiting for her to "check" on the computer, she gave us a scrawled out a price on a sticky-note showing the best price she could give us for what we wanted. It was $2,000 more than listed the readily available printed materials from TemperPedic available at Mattress Hub. We returned to Mattress Hub where we realized we could trust the sales person (John if I remember correctly) not to mislead us or give us bad information. This was the first time I bought a new mattress, so I was a little anxious about finding the right one. I stopped at a few other local stores before stopping at Mattress Hub.

Phil was super helpful! He helped me find the perfect mattress for me, and was very knowledgeable about how the mattresses were built and how that affects the feel and wearing. He understood my budget and didn't try to push the more expensive mattresses on me, and gave me plenty of time to try each mattress. He even made sure I properly tested it out by laying in different positions.

I came back a few days later, and he remembered exactly who I was and which mattress I was interested in. He was very helpful when it came time to pick out what add-ons I wanted, like a mattress protector and frame. He gave me a detailed rundown on how to properly care for the mattress and protector.

I have recommended Mattress Hub to all my friends, and even convinced my parents to get a future mattress there. They were very clear about the return policy with no fine print details. The box spring has held up to my cat's occasional clawing (the bed skirt is another story 😂). I felt like I was getting a steal, even if I payed almost full price for everything. I will definitely go back if I ever need...
