I’m pregnant and I’ve been craving biscuits and gravy for 2 weeks, now. So, you can imagine my excitement, when I saw the rave reviews about this place- as well, as the fact, that biscuits and gravy is one of their highlights. So, I happily ordered THAT and also the corned beef hash breakfast meal. The first thing, that rubbed me quite the wrong way, is that I was informed at time of payment (not ahead of time) that the establishment automatically applies an 18% tip, to every take out order… I asked, why they would do that, if they don’t have to wait on me, in the slightest- even people who are fully waited on, are in control of how much they tip, if any…and, that includes full clean up and constant checking in and refills! I don’t even tip my door dasher 18%! The hostess told me, that the reason for the automatic tipping, is because, she takes the orders and puts the takeout bags together…. I still don’t agree, at all, with this. Putting a basic to go order, together, is NOT a tip worthy action! I’m sorry- it’s just NOT! To top THAT off, I asked for a fountain drink, to be added to my order total…. She applied the drink to my bill, as WELL, as an UPCHARGE to my tip amount!! Just for simply putting liquid into a paper to go cup!!!😡I was PISSED!! But, I just wanted to eat my d*mn food and be done with the ordeal. So, I said nothing and left. Well, I excitedly dug in to my beloved biscuits and gravy- only to realize, that their version of biscuits and gravy, is not at all, the biscuits and gravy that I know and love! It was doughy, unappealing biscuits, slathered in some strange cheese sauce, with chunks of sausage in it…I didn’t even eat past the second bite. The corned beef hash meal, was less than stellar. the corned beef hash was pretty interesting.. it was pretty much just shredded corned beef and shredded potatoes.. nothing to write home about, let alone, make an entire meal out of. It wasn’t bad or anything- it just was a bit dry and bland. And, it also made me realize, how much I really just appreciate it’s canned counter-part. I enjoyed my home fries, though. If there’s one thing I can say, it’s that those are nice. Fast forward, to me asking for my biscuits and gravy to be exchanged for something else, free of charge. Which, I will say, they were more than willing to accommodate. So, I appreciate that. The thing is, that for my meal choice, all I ordered, was a simple meal of over easy eggs, home fries and toast. And, I was frustrated to find, that my eggs were so overcooked, that they may as well have been hard boiled!! Needless to say, as much as I think they have a nice staff, who was willing to work with me and I appreciate their home fries- I just don’t see myself...
Read moreI was in the White River Junction area for a week for business. Since this was within walking distance from my hotel in Vermont and they opened at 6 AM, I had breakfast here for four days. I wish I could have come here more often than that! They have so much variety, even on my last day there were so many more things that I wanted to try. Plus, I really regret not coming here for lunch on at least one of the days!
On the first day, I had the Cinnamon Roll Cakes with a side of scrambled eggs and coffee. The pancakes were so yummy! And the syrup was super delicious. I knew from then on that I had to have something that included syrup and coffee every day.
The second morning, I went with French Toast, again with a side of scrambled eggs and coffee, which satisfied my appetite for some carbs after a morning run through Wilder. The French toast slices were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing.
The third day, I wanted to go with something that was a little smaller portioned, so I went with one of the delicious breakfast sandwiches, the Basic Breakfast Sandwich. I paired that with one of the Grilled Sour Cream Donuts, served with whipped cream and syrup. Guess that was my dessert for the day! That really hit the spot.
And the last morning, I had to have more pancakes, so I tried the Raspberry Rhapsody Cakes. I think I liked the Cinnamon Roll Cakes slightly better, but these were so good as well! I love making pancakes at home, so I always like to try good pancakes at places like this to see how they do it and get ideas to try at home. I liked how the white chocolate chips were cooked into the cakes and the raspberry and syrup made it a delicious combination.
Going here in the early morning and on weekdays, I didn't have to wait for a table and was able to occupy a table by myself, so that was nice. The service was so attentive and caring as well. The servers were always ready to refill my coffee and get me anything I needed.
I also enjoyed the atmosphere of the dining area and the feel of going somewhere that locals hang out at. The eight ball was a great touch. I found it helpful for making decisions with such a large menu to choose from!
Additionally, the price is very economical. I spent about $12-15 including the tip every day for a very filling breakfast that got me going for the rest of the day.
If I need to go back to White River Junction/Lebanon again for business, you can bet I am going to visit the Four Aces Diner again! And this time, I will aim...
Read moreWe've been going to the diner a lot in the past 3-4 years. It change hands a few months ago and today was a third strike and you're out for us. We've noticed 90% is new staff on the last few visits and while they were pleasant their knowledge seemed to be lacking on the menu and what is suppose to come with what. Three different servers and all three made us wait to cash out while they talked to other servers or disappeared outback. The last three times something was wrong with our meals his side dish on my plate, his caramelized onions on my sandwich after saying "no onions" on my meal, missing lettuce and tomato and then being charged $2 for a slice when its thin and not fully ripe. . . I understand inflation and cost of things going up but that's a bit over the top. Kitchens mess up but as a server you should know what you put in and what the order should look like. Today's order was poutine for me and honey stung fried chicken for him and while the fries were good and the gravy flavor was ok it was gelatinous and I got about 6 cheese curds, his four piece chicken meal was more like the equivalent of 2 pieces as the other 2 look like they came from the "buffalo wing" basket. We miss seeing the staff that use to know us and always having a really good meal. We will give it a try again next year but for now we're off to other breakfast/lunch locations. All this being said Im giving a review based on the fact that I've been in the service industry for over thirty years with 20+ being in the food industry. I'm currently a buisness owner and I've been a server, bartender, prep cook, flatbread cook, host, shift supervisor...
