It pains me to give this place 3 stars because I really wanted to like this place.
I drove down from north ft Lauderdale to try shivers famous bbq, and here's my honest take on this establishment.
The restaurant itself gives off a text book feeling of southern comfort. Not fancy, which in this case is a great thing, clean, comfortable and smells amazing as soon as you walk in. You really get the sense that this place is a staple in the area and has been for decades.
The food itself was ok, the meat was flavorful, not dry, the ribs were cooked perfectly and the flavors were on par with some of the better bbq places I've visited. The brisket was slightly over done, usually brisket arrives hot, slightly pink in the middle and juicy all the way through, the brisket I received was all one color, visually not great but taste was ok, meat was tender. The baby back ribs and the brisket that I ordered arrived cold from the kitchen, room temperature at best, but the side of fried Mac n cheese (appears prepackaged) was piping hot and the mashed potatoes I ordered (likely boxed) was slightly warm.
The biggest knock on this place would most likely be the service staff. If the meat was cold, the service would be colder. The waitress that attended to me was apathetic and unwelcoming. Her attitude was of someone who hated their job and just wanted to leave. She showed no interest in being friendly, just took my order and dropped it off, even though I told her I had driven over an hour just to come try their bbq, her response was literally "oh ok what do you want to order ".
Three stars was honestly a stretch, but like I said, I really wanted to like this place but my experience was not great in the least bit.
Silver lining? I want to think that I just caught them on an off day, the food has potential and there wouldn't have to be any major changes for a customer to have an improved experience. The food isn't terrible, but leaves lots of room for improvement. Still, small changes would remedy this issue. Same for applies to their service and lack of personable staff.
Would I come back? Absolutely, but I would sincerely hope they make some changes to improve...
Read moreThis place is worth a try if you're in the Homestead area. It's one of the best BBQ places at which we've eaten in a long time. It's southern BBQ at its finest.
Prominently located on US 1, it is not hard to find. It's brightly lit up at night and the storefront screams that you're about to get a wonderful downhome style meal. Inside there's long benches arranged in parallel running the length of the building. It's meant to give the feeling that you're in a picnic pavilion. It's possible at busier times that you could be a little cozy with your neighboring party. But we were there at a time where it was moderately busy and we never had the feeling of being on top of those next to us.
We were seated right away and our server attended to us without delay. She did a great job throughout our stay. The menu featured a lot of Southern favorites making it hard to choose. One thing we knew we wanted to try was the fried corn on the cob and it turned out to be a highlight. It was made to perfection and tasted as good as it sounds.
For her main, my wife decided to try the Burnt End Sandwich, which she enjoyed a lot. I had a taste and thought it was exceptional. Another highlight for this place is the fabulous array of sides. She chose the Cole Slaw and Sweet Potato Soufflé. The cole slaw was good but the soufflé was great. I had the BBQ Chicken Sandwich with Cornbread Soufflé and Baked Beans. The baked beans were good, the sandwich was excellent, but the soufflé was special. The combination of tastes made this meal perhaps the best one of our one-week trip to Florida.
Something else to highlight was the value. We had just water to drink so our bill with food, tax and tip was under $50 USD. At less than $25 each with leftovers to take home for another small meal or snack, I was quite happy with the value. The quality was great and the quantity was quite sufficient. If we get down this way again, we'll be sure to make...
Read moreHello. First I would say my friend and I have never eaten there before and we did not know the rules. We went up to the counter inside and asked how it works. We were told to wait and someone would be along to take care of us. So we did. Then a girl behind the register asked us for our order. So we gave it and she told us to wait outside and someone would call us in. Our intent was to eat there at the restaurant so we did what she said. An hour later I went in to see if they forgot about us. The woman behind the register said that our food has been ready and it was in a bag but she had to get our drinks and my banana pudding. So I asked if we could sit down and she looked at me weird and said the counter was for takeout and we could not stay and eat. Btw the restaurant was a quarter empty and there plenty of seats. We said our intent was always to eat there and we were new and doing what we were told. She said she had to ask the manager if we could stay and eat. I was baffled. Anyway she came back and said that the manager said no, we had to leave, and we didn’t follow the rules. Btw I had paid for the food over an hour ago. I said okay, I pushed the food back to her because we had no idea how long it had been sitting there and we walked out. My bill was 60 bucks and I didn’t even ask for a refund. By that time I was starting to get angry and if we stayed any longer there would have been a scene. Hey I hope you guys enjoy the 60 dollar tip for doing nothing at all. Scottie
Quick update: Hey just updating my one star post. Literally less than a n hour after I posted my negative experience the owner reached out and gave me his personal number, a refund, and an apology….. he explained the situation but the fact he even contacted me will guarantee I will be a lifelong customer. Bravo Sir. I am being friends to eat this weekend.
Thanks...
