Original Zomato Review 10/11/13 - Smithtown Has Potential. Smithtown has potential to be a good eat. I've eaten there twice because I wanted to give it another chance.
Here's some constructive criticism: (1) change the portion size a bit to equal the $11 for the basket, (2) know your menu, and (3) get more drink choices.
Day 1 Flounder basket - the battered fish was good; however, the portion was too skinny [another person at our table ordered the same and received 2x the fish I did]. Ordered beer slaw, thought it was different and good.
Day 2 Catfish basket [ordered because they were out of flounder] - the piece of fish was enormous [about 2-3x of the flounder from the day before] and TOUGH. I've never had a piece of fish that was tough. Ordered beer slaw and received something totally different than the day before.
Talking to the wait staff - they told me that fish is sold by portion, around 5 ounces, but I'd say I had 10-12 ounces of catfish on the second day. Also, they believe that I received the creamy slaw instead of beer slaw on first day.
Smithtown has potential to be a good restaurant, but has to work out some of the newness and kinks...
Read moreHonestly, I had no idea Smithtown Seafood was such an amazing establishment until my wife and I stopped in to the neighboring West Sixth Brewery and saw a line of people ordering food. I've always learned that whenever there's a line of people waiting to order, there's good food to be had. I can't even begin to explain the taste of Smithtown's food. My wife ordered the Fish N Chips, and I ordered the Buffalo fried catfish sandwich. I've never honestly been that loving of catfish since they always tasted muddy/murky to me. I went ahead with this though because I'm obsessed with buffalo flavored anything and I am so glad I chose it. It's the best fish sandwich I have ever had. The fish was fresh and clean. No dirty river taste whatsoever. The breading was crispy and the fish was flaky and delicate. The sauce combination of buffalo and whatever they used on the slaw made for such an aromatic enticement. It was one of those sandwiches that makes your mouth water even while you're going in for a bite. If you're in the area, there's no doubt you have to stop in and try this place out. I'll be back for more Buffalo...
Read moreI was so excited to try this place after all of the raving reviews. I came specifically for the fish tacos as they were revered as “some of the best” in the comments.
Sadly, they are not even close to being anywhere near “the best”… at first bite my taco was decent with really good sauce, but there was very little cabbage. The second taco had mushy fish and from there I was done. The rest of the day my stomach hurt and I was up and down that entire night being sick.
The ONLY REASON I am giving this place two stars is because of their cashier Tiffany who was so pleasant to talk with. She was helpful and informative regarding the menu and I even got to know a little about her heritage and what she loves to do outside of work in our brief time talking together. Very friendly staff.
Honestly, if not for the mushy fish that made me sick I would have given a 3-4 star review. Definitely quality check plates/food before giving...
