Absolute Hidden Gem!
I happened upon this place today while at work in Highlands Ranch. I was scouring through Uber eats for something tasty and for something that the rest of the office could agree on. Mi Cocina popped up closest to me and I was instantly intrigued by the thumbnails of gorgeous food. After a few thumb flicks to the left, through a sea of mouthwatering Images, I decided to look them up on maps and discovered they were less than two miles from me. I decided to drive over and place an order in hopes of finding a cool little lunch spot to visit and chill at in the future. FYI this place is more tucked away than an IUD. Zoom in on maps to get your bearings before you visit. I walked in and was promptly greeted by John. John was extremely exuberant and had a fulgent cadence to his voice. John was exceptionally polite and hospitable. Sensing an extreme amount of pride, I asked him if he was the owner. John replied that he was just an employee. This impressed me even more. After talking with him, I learned that Mi Cocina has been around for over 15 years. John then showed me the breakfast burrito holding area where an assortment of hot and mild burritos are ready for, “Express” pickup. Everything was very clean and orderly. Two patrons visited in the short time I was there and were out the door in less than 60 seconds with piping hot breakfast burritos. I ordered the carnitas plate with corn tortillas and an a la carte crispy chili relleno. My college’s ordered Mexican hamburgers and crispy rellenos. Let me just say that the carnitas were some of the most authentic I have had in a long time that weren't produced in my own kitchen. It was tender and perfectly seasoned with a kiss of cinnamon and bay leaves. The only thing I would have changed would have been to throw it on the cook top or under the broiler for a minute or two to get some crispy edges and caramelization. The broth was very tasty, and the bounty of cooked onions was a great consistency and contrast to the rest of the dish as I continued plunging my corn tortilla in over and over again removing these heavenly meat nuggets one by one. My beans and rice were also rock solid and paired nicely with the star of the show that was the unctuous carnitas. Let me not forget about the Sancho Panza to my main meal, the crispy relleno. My crispy, Rotund friend was juicy and oozing with gooey cheese. I was so full by the time I began my attack on him, but I couldn’t stop myself from removing him from existence post haste. I am looking forward to my next visit to Mi Cocina Express as well as my next encounter with John. If you are near Broadway and 470 in Highlands Ranch, take some time and treat yourself to a solid Mexican meal. If you need a bite in the AM, do yourself a favor and swing by. Read moreI've been eating at Mi Cochina in Litteton for many years. Yesterday, April 18, 2018, 12:30ish, I saw something that SHOCKED ME!!! I saw the waiter, a new person I have never seen there before, was SO RUDE to a group of elderly people that were probably in their late 80's at least. He was screaming about how one said they ordered a different plate (like #5) and he insisted they ordered another number. I could not believe this guy, named "JOHN" instead of just fixing the problem, insisted with a loud voice how "you people are just trouble", and it continued throughout their meal when John apparently kept bringing the wrong things and getting more irritated. One lady apparently ordered tap water without ice, and John brought water with ice. Then he brought COLD water and not tap water, but without any ice. I can imagine people with old teeth are probably really sensitive to cold drinks. Then they got into an argument about not getting separate tickets which I am quite sure based on their conversations they probably asked for them at the beginning. John got so upset at this point he put the little iPad credit card thingy down on the table and said something like "if you want separate tickets, do it yourself". Eventually another worker came over and took over for John. Prices are way higher now too! A bottle of Corona is $5.50!!!!!! Add tip and tax and you are paying $7 for a measly bottle of beer when it is all said and done. I would have confronted John the Grumpasaurus except I was in a business lunch and it would have perhaps led to me losing my temper (which I was already close!) and I knew I didn't want to make a scene with my present company. Very, very disappointing time, and likely will keep me away from John in the future. I'll call up ahead of time to see if he is on duty if I ever want to go in there again. When the group asked to speak to the manager, John said HE was the manager BTW. He certainly isn't the owner because owners have a lot more to lose by just flat being RUDE like John was. John appeared to be older than the usual help I...
Read moreI stopped in Mi Cocina Express today for two breakfast burritos. The place is very cute and clean. The gentleman that greeted me was very nice, and I believe on another occasion I came in, he was going from working at this restaurant all morning to their other one for the evening (extremely hard working family restaurant from what I saw). The burritos were delicious. But it's what the guy did that really made my day, and I think it shows great character. He was not aware that today was a really bad day for me, but he just threw in extra burritos for me for no reason. He had said he threw "a few extra" in, but I thought he was referring to sides of green chili or something. He threw in extra burritos! I literally needed to feed my whole family so his act of kindness really helped. And it was that kindness that really turned my whole day around as well. I want to thank him and let him know, that as a lifelong restaurant worker myself, I value businesses that work hard, provide amazing food and have excellent staff and owners. Thank you for providing that in such rough times....
