We were in Lockhart and wanted to get lunch. It was Sunday and we wanted to have goof BBQ. They have overall great reviews so we went here. The worst thing about the experience is that it is self serve. We have a large family so that complicates things immediately. The second part of that is that we hadn't been there so we didn't know what to do and no one greeted us and told us what to do. However, once asked they did explain. There was a little complication because we didn't have enough hands to get our food at once and we needed to pay and then go back but they weren't busy and let us do it. (We had small children with us). The sides for the most part looked good, the sides we got tasted good and the meat was delicious. The bread was not homeade that we received but they seemed to not have enough on hand because I did see a homeade loaf available. As with most places right now, they appear short staffed but trying to do their best. The cashier was helpful and kind and that was appreciated! We'd come back but I would highly recommend a greeting for each customer that enters and comes up to the line so that someone can help them figure out what's next or help serve their food if they're not going to be able to carry it/serve themselves. It would definitely increase the quality of service. The only other issue I have is the banana pudding was store bought and not traditional BBQ pudding. It was good but man it could have been great!...

First and foremost, let me start with the positive :) My memory of this place has always been amazing. As a child my father would bring us here once a month for some amazing bbq. Everything was delicious back then. This is back when Lockhart, TX had the reputation as the Capitol of Texas BBQ. Fast forward to present day. The excitement was the same as before. A nostalgic feeling driving through old Lockhart and seeing Chisholm trail once again. The building looks the same, the inside was clean and well managed. The food, however, was a different story. The brisket tasted oven baked, the Mac and cheese was cold as if pulled out of the refrigerator and definitely not fresh, the ribs were also a disappointment. The brisket and ribs lacked smoke flavor. The potato salad was ok and the okra was also ok at best. The best things on the plate was the sausage, and the sweet tea was also on point. The customer service was great as well. Everyone was nice. It’s sad to see the food quality go down the drain. The best way that I can describe the quality is to compare it to Dickies BBQ. A true BBQ enthusiast will know what I’m talking about. That’s not a good thing. I hope the owners read this and take it as constructive criticism and bring back the old recipes and love. I say this with love and respect and I will definitely give this historic spot another try in the future before I switch to Kreuz, Smittys, or Blacks. Best wishes to...

I grew up in Lockhart and Chisholm Trail was always the bomb when it came to BBQ. Fast forward 21 years and man am I disappointed! I had purchased a family pack for an astronomical price at the window. I was asked upon ordering if I wanted juicy or lean brisket. I requested lean. Also ordered their sausage as it was always good too plus the awesome hashbrown taters. Got my order and took a second mortgage on my home to pay for it and took off toward the house excited to finally get some Chisholm Trail BBQ. Well, the brisket was as I could best describe as a fat salad! The fat was so intertwined in the meat it was impossible to sort out the lean meat because it was probably 70% fat. The sausage links went from full hand sized links to palm sized links and the flavor was waay off. The hashbrown potatoes had to have been days old and had to have been microwaved as they were rubbery. The potatoes salad was alright but not the same either and the beans were under cooked. It was a disgrace of a meal and honestly my dogs ate my second mortgage of a meal. I'm sad that Floyd is gone, passed on I presume. When he was there that was in my opinion the Best BBQ in Texas. Now? You would to have to ask my dogs because it was horrible. 1 star because 0 is...

Welcome to one of the best barbecue joints in Texas. I first noticed this spot due to the long lines waiting to order from the drive through, every time I passed through Lockhart. You always hear about Lockhart BBQ, primarily because of the more tourist focused operations near downtown. But did you ever wonder where all the local Lockhart BBQ lovers go? They hit up the Chisholm Trail! As I mentioned, the drive through is always busy, so I usually take the time to dine inside. This is a cafeteria style ordering operation, grab a tray and load up on desired sides while placing your meat order. The folks here are very friendly and down to earth, and will answer all your questions. The best side in my opinion is their potato salad, which sets a standard for ingredients, texture and taste… the classic accompaniment for brisket! On this visit, I ordered a fresh chopped brisket sandwich with the moist cut. Pro-tip - Get a fresh chop so you can add your own amount of sauce, keeps the sandwich from getting too soggy! The ribs are great too! Next time you are in Lockhart Texas, skip the tourist traps and give Chisholm Trail a try for some true local color!

Full disclosure. I walked in wanting a salad and came out finishing a 2 meat plate. I have no regrets. LOL. I'm not a local. I traveled to Lockhart for work and came here based on recommendations from my co-workers. I'm big fan of going where the locals go. This place did not disappoint. Probably best bang for your buck. Overall the food was good. Brisket was moist and tender, and their bbq sauce went great with it. This place is a also good option for BBQ chicken if you're not feeling beef or pork. Also, you can't go wrong with the sweet tea here. The service was excellent. Walking in can be overwhelming, but the staff was super helpful and gave me great recommendations on sides. The atmosphere is a cozy, no frills type of place. Soon as you walk in, you'll smell the BBQ and it's everything you'll want to smell walking in a bbq restaurant. Now Lockhart has some big name BBQ places with really good BBQ. Don't get me wrong. But if you want to go where the locals go. Come here. You'll see come lunch time when there's a line.
