Big Bear is a new offering in Longmont, a sleeper town for great restaurants. It's hard to shine in Longmont, but I think this restaurant with a mouthful of a name (we'll just call it BBBP) may have a chance to deliver mouth filling potatoes covered in savory goodness for a while. Tucked in a corner of a shopping center, the exact location that BBBP is in has seemed destined for failure. The dead Safeway nearby has not helped manners at all. I sincerely hope that BBBP does not suffer the fate of the previous two restaurants in their location. One was a sub-par breakfast joint, the other a sub- par Mexican restaurant. What about BBBP? I think if people can be attracted to the area, BBBP is destined to survive because they offer something fresh. Sure, I can get an amazing BBQ injected baked potato at Georgia Boys, but BBBP has many unique offerings that are sure to delight. As for the inside, I like what they've done with the place. Nice wooden tables and a clean look overall. It's in a mini mall, so you can't expect to be transported into a bear den or anything like that. Ordering is easy, at the counter, and you grab your own drink unless you want some of their special soda offerings. Their soft drink machine was on the fritz, and as a result, my iced tea had a weird taste, no biggy, though. I ordered the Nantucket, a generous portion of what seemed to me to be fresh lobster with garlic butter, parsley, and a half lemon (with the lemon diaper filter thing, nice touch). All of that for $20.25. Now the Meets expectation score might start making sense. No market price nonsense, no gouging, just a load of lobster on a big ass tater at a reasonable price. My biggest recommendation, BBBP, is to put some sauces on the table for when people have chewed through their toppings and only have potato. BBQ sauce, A1, worcestershire, all good things on potato. I don't want to have to come ask for sour cream. Overall, a delight and a hidden gem. Find it and have a good meal. Hopefully whatever is going on with the Safeway corpse right now will bring in plenty of folks, because BBBP...
Read moreI am incredibly disappointed to be leaving this review. So much to the point I keep writing and rewriting it, but I'm finally posting. I grew up in Longmont, and love supporting local businesses. My mom and I were so excited about this place, that opening day was marked on the calendar.
Our first attempt to order, they had run out of potatoes. It seemed a little strange for a potato restaurant to run out of potatoes, but it was opening day, so we shrugged it off.
Our second attempt to order, they sold out to the person ahead of us.
A lot of people would have given up by now, but we were so excited, we decided to try one more time. I called ahead to check that they had plenty of potatoes, and they assured me they did. In the 15 minutes it took us to get there, they got down to their last 3, which left us one short for our order. This was a 5:30 on a Saturday night.
We decided to get them anyway, as well as a couple sides. We waited 30 minutes in a mostly empty restaurant and watched at least 2 dozen people get turned away. The two staff members were hardly apologetic, and did little to nothing that would have encouraged those people to come back.
Once we finally got our food, we took it home to eat. I ordered no bacon on mine for dietary reasons, which showed on the receipt, but it was on there anyway. Other than that there was nothing terribly wrong with the food. That said, it was nothing special. We got three different types, and we felt like none of them were very flavorful.
I heard the gentleman working say that they were getting a bigger oven, so the running out shouldn't remain an issues. That said, I don't think I'll be returning here anyway. Mediocre food, disappointing customer service, and overly...

The Baked Potato with BBQ Sauce and Brisket was a savory triumph. The potato, perfectly baked with a tender, fluffy interior, served as the ideal canvas for the rich, smoky brisket. The tangy sweetness of the BBQ sauce elevated the dish, complemented by a crisp, refreshing slaw that added a needed contrast in both texture and flavor.
The Beer Mac and Cheese was an indulgent masterpiece. The cheese sauce was luxuriously smooth, coating each piece of pasta with precision, while the delicate infusion of beer lent a sophisticated depth to the dish. This side elevated comfort food to an exceptional level.
The Chicken Pot Pie Potato with Baked Beans was an inspired interpretation of a classic comfort dish. The potato absorbed the hearty, savory filling, while the baked beans provided a subtly sweet counterpoint that completed the flavor profile beautifully.
And then came dessert: a cheesecake that defied expectations. Dense yet impossibly creamy, it struck the perfect balance of sweetness and tang. Each bite was pure indulgence, solidifying it as one of the finest cheesecakes I have ever tasted.
