My parents and my family ate here a few weeks ago, and we loved the food, we loved the atmosphere, and on the face of it we loved our service. However, when it came time to pay and the waitress handed us our bill my dad insisted on paying for all of us. He asked me to look at the itemized bill to make sure everything was on there, and to figure out how much tip he should leave. I normally don't look at the itemized receipt when a server gives it to me, I just hand them my card. However, when I looked at this receipt I noticed our server had already added an 18% gratuity. I thought that was odd because we only had 6 people in our party; not what I consider a large party. Also, she hadn't mentioned when she dropped off the check that gratuity had already been added. I pointed it out to my dad and let him know to not add any more tip because she'd already put it on there. When the waitress came back she still didn't mention the gratuity, and after she ran my dad's card she brought back the credit card receipt but NOT the original itemized bill. And on that receipt was a place to add a tip, like on any receipt at a restaurant, but no indication that we had already paid for the tip. My dad felt weird putting a zero on the tip line, and when he asked the waitress to make sure he wasn't stiffing her on a tip, THAT was when she readily admitted that yes, the gratuity was already on the original bill so that was no problem. We left and the more I thought about it the more I wondered how many times that server has done that and managed to get a double gratuity out of a customer. And was that just our waitress running that scam, or is that common practice at this location? Either way, I thought everyone should know they really need to inspect their receipts when they eat here. Like I said, the food's delicious, and I'll probably be back, but I will no longer hand the server my card without checking to see if they've already...
Read moreI'm going to dispense with all of the other stuff and go straight to the food. My wife and I and a friend arrived mid-afternoon in hopes of beating a Saturday crowd (we were wrong) standing room only. My wife ordered fried oysters and I ordered the fried jumbo shrimp and crab cakes both with baked potatoes. NOTHING was hot, NOTHING was freshly prepared and it was quite evident that our food had been mass produced and placed in warmers for hours, probably since or before the lunch hour. My wife's fried oysters that should be succulent inside the breading were disgustingly dry and had a leather like texture (I tried one). My shrimp was not any better, but I was starving and ate mine anyway. We all had to send our barely warm baked potatoes back and the ones we got back weren't much better. Now I know, when you have this kind of volume of patrons waiting to eat, that a certain amount of pre food preparation is needed so you can quickly serve the masses and shovel em out the door so you can sit the next customers down. However, Tia Juanita's of Longview, allowing mass produced food to sit for hours and dry out, and serving it to your customers is not acceptable. We've eaten at three other Tia Juanita's and have never had this problem. My wife did get her oysters comped by a defensive floor manager, who clearly didn't want to listen as to the quality of the food the kitchen was dishing out. As we tried to describe the quality of this food, he cut us off and just said, "do you want another order?" When my wife said she didn't he just said he'd take it off the ticket and walked off. I really hope we were the only table that had this experience as we've always loved Tia Juanita's, but I...
