Southern Style Chicken & Waffle — Restaurant in Lorton

Pretty disappointed. Had high hopes with this place showing a 4.8 rating. I arrived and ordered a spicy chicken sandwich with a side, macaroni and cheese, a banana pudding and a lemonade. I was told 20 minutes which seems on brand for fresh to order so I wasn’t sweating the time. 30 minutes passed and I’m the only one in the restaurant so I inquired about my food. The dude at the register tells me 5 more minutes. 5 more minutes passes and nothing. He finally brings me my sandwich, pudding and drink but no Mac and cheese and says they are working on it. I went ahead and ate the food he did bring while I waited thinking the side would be done before I was done (full disclosure, I do eat relatively quickly after 18 years of military service). The chicken had good flavor but was dryer than I’ve ever seen fresh chicken. The red sauce they give you with the sandwich though is fire. Really good subtle sweet taste pairing with the chicken. The banana pudding was nothing to write home about being from the south but I’ve had much worse from a restaurant lol. Lemonade was good. Mac and cheese took about 42 minutes to come out and I took it to go because it was literally the surface temperature of the sun. When it was finally edible, I took a bite, very okay Mac and cheese - standard baked mac and cheese flavoring but I did enjoy the crispy top layer they were able to achieve. Overall, the food was okay, not worth 35-40+ minute wait but I could see the appeal if you ordered ahead. They didn’t seem to mind that they had me wait and had no reason why so I’m leaving the review as it’s the only real recourse I have as a patron. Maybe others will have a more positive time. Ordered pickup on Doordash. Wanted a quick snack. I ended up getting the mac n cheese. The other recommendations were mentioning how good it was, so I was intrigued. Pasta is def one of my fav food groups.

Decent price for the portion. It is definitely home made and baked. I can def taste that. Good seasonings and it is indeed delicious and as good as the other say it is.

However, when I picked up my order, the woman behind the counter yelled at me and pointed angrily to a QR code saying "We need reviews! Do one." She then stared at me like I was to do it right there before receiving my food. I shrugged and was so taken aback, I didn't know what to say. I panicked and said Thanks, and left quickly with my food.

I did consider never even writing one, due to the weird experience of being requested to write a review. But the attitude and negative intensity made me feel like I had to be honest. The woman was very off putting to me wanting to write a more positive review. Perhaps this can be a teaching moment. Normally, I LOVE reviewing and bringing more publicity to places that really deserve and earn it. I love advocating for the consumer just as much as the creators. It's a hard economy out there for everyone. Hard work is something I definitely want to shout-out. But never before have I felt so badly about being asked to review a place.

I recently drove by and saw this new restaurant that replaced another chicken joint. As soon as I saw chicken and waffles, I was like yes! I got tenders, wings, fries, mac and cheese and a waffle. I pretty much wanted to try almost everything on the menu. My favorite item was the waffle. It is sweet and has a vanilla / brown sugar / cinnamon sort of taste. But it's not cinnamon forward. There's a little special something to it, it's not your average Belgian waffle.

As other folks have said the mac and cheese is very good. It is Southern style, baked mac and cheese. You get a good portion for a side. It is very cheesy and a little loose. I personally had to add a little salt and pepper. But the flavor was very good.

I was also very surprised by the chicken tenders. They are definitely hand breaded cuts of chicken breast. They are well seasoned as are the chicken wings. The chicken wings are a little bit more peppery than the tenders but both are very good. The fries are crispy seasoned fries. Both the tenders and fries were mom and toddler approved.

All in all this was a fantastic experience. The staff were personal, polite and helpful. Everything is made hot and fresh. So expect a little bit of a wait once you order. The shop is bright and has a good amount of seating.

I look forward to ordering in the future. My only desire would be able to see them offering online ordering directly through the restaurant not a third...
