Food Vs. Atmosphere. It’s difficult for a restaurant to get all the nuances right. There’s so many things that can make or break your dining experience.
Overall Bottega Taboo does a nice job of creating a unique experience. It’s very artistic and bohemian, the arched wooden gate welcomes you in to an eclectic art fusion space. A DJ and Saxophone player were playing live music at the front of the restaurant (A great Afro house music with a live Sax accompaniment). Seating was ample and available. We requested to sit a little further back from the music because it can be too loud to enjoy your food.
Some of the tables inside offered a love seat couch to sit on which is great if you’re your on a date and want to sit back and relax and enjoy each others company.
We did not have any of the mixed drinks so I can’t speak to that, but the wait staff was very friendly and welcoming all around.
We ordered a delicious romaine salad with a lemon garlic tahini dressing. It was phenomenal and the lettuce was high quality. Not a stock romaine you would get generically, it seemed like something from the farmers market. High quality and fresh.
We also ordered the lamb chops and two of the sushi rolls. To be fair, we’ve tasted the best sushi in LA and out of curiosity we wanted to try and find some other delicious sushi options at other restaurants. The sushi here at Botegga Taboo was ok. Our standard for sushi is that you should be able to enjoy the flavors of the roll without dipping it in soy sauce. Size wise the rolls were good, but there was almost too much avocado on the tops of the sushi. It was too creamy and not really popping with any nuanced flavors. A second roll we had had asparagus in it, that was an interesting choice but I don’t think it worked. Asparagus was too thick and crunchy and offered no real flavor add, whereas perhaps cucumber would have done the trick of crunchy and a slight flavored layer. It was not the best sushi in LA, but it was still enjoyable. Overall it landed as okay.
Lastly, we ordered lamb chops. The lamb chops came out nicely plated, there were two pieces with two bones per piece, so a hearty sized lamb chop. There was some herbs and other accessories on the plate, but overall not anything to explode your tastebuds with pleasure.
I would recommend this place as a spot to hang out and bring a friend from out of town, but perhaps it might be better served for stopping by to grab a mixed drink and then heading somewhere for dinner.
Pleasurable experience as a whole and worthy of checking out. I’m sure that Bottega Taboo will continue to improve as it has all the potential ahead and already off to a great start. This is a great opportunity to support something...
