Amazing sourdough bread. The plan was to make chili bread bowls. My part of the plan was to get the bread bowls. I looked on-line to see who had the best bread bowls in town. Searches including locations in the west side and some in the OC; Iiving in LA proper I decided to go to this bakery in the Cypress Park area of LA. Knowing that bread bowls aren't always available for pick-up, I gave them a call a couple of days before to inquire. The attendant was really friendly asking was size I wanted: 1 1/2lb, 1lb or 1/2lb bowls. I opted for the 1/2lb size bowl since we were planning on serving chili in bowls more as a novelty than an actual meal. So, yes you do have to pre-order the bread bowls. The 1/2 size bowls were each $1 and there is no minimum quantity to order. I ended up ordering 1 1/2 dozen. As it turned out those 1/2 lb bowls were bigger than expected. They were about 7-8 inches in diameter and about 5 inches high. Nevertheless, they were a hit.

A favorite childhood memory of mine is lining up at the outdoor stalls, shivering as we gulped down soup and warm bread at the standing booths. Fisherman's Wharf and its sourdough has changed since then, but the sourdough bread at Frisco Baking Co. somehow captures the same taste and texture of the long lost bread style. My dad always made his own bread with the exception of picking up the delicious sourdough rounds from the Frisco bakery and cut it into 1.5" slices served hot with perfectly melted butter. My dad passed away last year, but I continue to go to the Frisco bakery and I think of my father with fond memories of sharing that heavenly loaf of Sourdough. Their French bread is also just as amazing and they are so reasonably priced....
