Normally when I rate a place, I try to reserve 5 star ratings for those that meet AND exceed expectations. Looking at the outside of this hole-in-the-wall strip mall location, and the aging tables inside, expectations were not super high. We picked it because we wanted to eat at a local spot, non-chain, and a well rated breakfast. This one was on the shortlist we put together while visiting Tarzana and happened to be closest to our hotel. Food was a little pricier than a comparable northern California restaurant would be (based on appearances) but not by much - maybe a dollar or buck fifty higher. There were a couple of unusual breakfast items on the menu, which was nice to see. My wife had the steak and eggs, with pancake on the side and I had their Spanish Omelette, switching out the usual ground beef for chorizo when I saw that they had that available.
The food arrived in a timely manner and the two fellas who served us were kind and attentive, though one of them kept trying to serve cokes to people (like me!) who had ordered COFFEE!! LOL. I was not the only one this happened to in the time we were in there. Food was good, basic breakfast fare and I really did enjoy the omelet - definitely recommend switching in the chorizo. The country potatoes had some corn and spice in them, so that was a little unusual, but welcomed.
So at this point, this is what I would normally go with as a very solid and respectable 4. So why a 5? It's back to that exceed expectations. Food was very solid, but the service (minus the coffee/coke thing) was great. We were kept topped off on drinks, they asked if they could bring us anything else and/or how it was going - too often you can get ignored by servers leading to a negative experience. As my wife and I discussed upon leaving, there is a fine line between being well attended to and "bothered" and these guys didn't cross that. I would definitely return again at some future point after we've tried some other places that also made our short list...
Read moreLocated in a strip mall, Greystoke Grill is a hidden gem in the Valley. It has an old school diner type of feeling and that's because it's been around for 40 years! I love the decor and its prime location - found parking easily on-site. Immediately upon entering, our party of 5 was greeted with a big smile and quickly seated. I personally loved the variety in their breakfast menu. I got to try a little bit of everything since all ordered different items. The Huevos a La Mexicana are superb! They had jalapeno but it wasn't overwhelming or too spicy; just right. Their homestyle potatoes are well seasoned and addicting! Their toast and coffee was on point, and our server did an excellent job in ensuring our mugs were never empty. We finished with a breakfast dessert of pancakes with whip cream and chocolate syrup topped with strawberries and bananas. Needless to say, our group devoured the whole thing! Overall, this place is an excellent establishment. I love that it's been under new ownership for over 5 years, because it shows! Staff is super attentive, courteous and the food was reasonably priced and large portions. Two...
Read moreFor an older strip mall restaurant I have to say I was surprised with the quality of food, customer service, and variety of the menu. I met my cousin for lunch. This is down the street from her salon. I know she is particular about where she eats and what she is exposed to - especially since COVID - 19. I knew I could trust her recommendation.
I had the Calistoga Salad with a piece of rye toast. The ingredients of the salad were chopped to nice small bite sizes. The veggies were exceptionally fresh. The cheese was extremely tasty. The poppyseed dressing was a perfect blend of spices to sugar. Not sweet which I prefer. The rye toast was delicious - fresh with a great amount of caraway seeds.
Seriously - this is a place you want to return to in order to try other items on their menu. I will definitely look to going here again when I am...
