Update: they've done away with the online order platform and curries now come with rice. They're up-front about credit card fees too and give a discount for cash, which is fair. The prices now seem reasonable for the quality, quantity, and neighborhood. So, back to 5 stars. I have a regular Indian place again, yay.
Original review: I'm torn about the recent price increases. I've gotten takeout from here every other week for a year. But it's gotten to be too much, and now I've stopped coming. Take the Chicken Tikka Masala, which used to be $12 and came with rice. Currently it's $16, plus $4.50 (!) for white rice. Noya isn't trying to be a high class Indian restaurant or anything, though the food is really good and the service is very friendly. I understand that LA is expensive, but anyway I can't justify going there anymore.
Also the last time I was going to order takeout, the new online ordering mechanism defaulted to a 20% tip and took multiple steps to remove the tip. Huge turnoff for me personally. Tipping on to-go orders is ridiculous in the first place. Who am I tipping? Add a service fee if you must, but trying to make me feel bad for not tipping is manipulative and annoying.
The chicken tikka masala is excellent, and the saag paneer, dal tarka, chicken biryani, and garlic naan are all very good. Really almost everything I've ever had from here has been very good or better, and served...
Read moreWell this is a very friendly affordable place. It's not so crowded you can enjoy conversation with great friends that you bring. This is probably not the best curry- it's probably a step or two below freezer section curry since it tasted more like red pasta sauce with tough chicken chunks. I don't think there was hardly any curry in that curry but, I ate the pasta rice anyway. They don't have any beverages but pop and water or one lassi. They were out of chai. Um, How are you going to be out of chai at an Indian restaurant? Anyway, everyone is so nice that you can't even feel bothered. There was only one person in the front and possibly only one person in the kitchen so, service was decent, yet it was clear that you are going to need to be very understanding if they don't place things or pick up things correctly. It felt like the restaurant was being run by college students. If you ask for something, they point. The naan was more like a buttered cracker, but you guessed it I ate it anyway, because what are you going to do? I probably wouldn't go here again, but if someone was running out of choices and needed to find a fast, affordable, and friendly place to connect, the people are nice and they feed you a lot even if it's not quite...
