This place for me was hit or miss. The service is excellent, I will give them that for sure!
It's the kind of place that's a little bit off of Ventura Boulevard, valet parking only, and some place you would bring a date to. The outside patio is really where it's at. I don't think I would bring a family here, or little kids. Definitely more cozy, table for two type vibe.
My cousin ordered the steak and eggs. Total hit! Perfect combo of steak two eggs.
Me, total miss. I ordered two things. Let's dissect for a moment.
The eggs benedict, regular style, were okay. Nothing fancy. There's something missing. It's literally two English muffins, a poached egg on top, and some Hollandaise sauce.
Maybe it would have been nice if they would have grilled the English muffins on the flat top, to give it more of a buttery look, texture, crunch?
I didn't really care for the potatoes that came on the side. They are way over seasoned, and have that gnarly chile/cumin flavor that I dislike immensely. If they would have been just regular potatoes with salt and pepper, I would have been a more happy camper.
The banana pancakes have a light banana flavor. It's "ok." They put fresh raspberry, strawberry, and blueberries on top, and also a sprinkling of walnuts. One thing I didn't like about the first fruit on top, was that it was a little awkward to get the fruit on the fork with the pancake. This is because the pancake is dry, and also the fruit is dry. So it's a bunch of individual components that somehow need to be put together. One suggestion I have, please see below...
Maybe if they would lightly cook the fruit , in a very simple simple and Light syrup (please don't over sugar it) that could work? What I would do is get that compote of light syrup and fruit on the side (in a separate Ramekin). Then I can either dip the pancake into the fresh fruit sauce, or pour it on top, to assemble a good bite of let's say strawberry, and the pancake all on one fork.
Another thing I didn't really like about the pancakes was that they might have been a little too Bland for my taste. Maybe just needs an extra pinch of salt in the batter, to bring out more of the flavor.
Hey, I'm just...
Read moreA nice Cafe on a side street just off Ventura boulevard in Woodward hills. The only street parking is on Ventura at the meters, there is a valet only lot that charges $7. The item I had was aspirational but fell short on execution. Smoked Salmon Benedict. I've eaten and prepared a lot of these. The English muffin was thin and toasted well done so it was very hard, like a cracker. Usually the Hollandaise and egg yolk soak in to soften it but there was not enough of either. Egg was poached firm and not enough sauce. The Hollandaise had a lot of lemon juice, it was unpleasantly sour and had no salt. Under the sauce and egg was a huge pile of caramelized onions. Complete non-sequitur that ruined the dish. Under that was a huge pile of unseasoned arugula that ruined it even more, and under that a single thin slice of smoked salmon that was cooked well done from the heat of muffin and onions. Ugh. I ordered it with a salad, the dressing had no flavor and no salt. I tell my cooks all the time, salt is the least expensive yet most important ingredient on the kitchen. A lesson not yet learned in this kitchen. Taste everything before you serve it. Is it delicious? Girlfriend ordered a fountain soda, it was completely flat, no carbonation. Bus boy admitted that it was poured and sat for a while before it was delivered, the replacement was fine. Anyway, $22 at breakfast for a luxurious dish like smoked salmon Benedict, please don't ruin it with terrible Hollandaise and piles of non sequitur ingredients. I want to see chilled raw salmon poking out from under a soft poached egg, rich buttery Hollandaise balanced with a hint of lemon, and a crispy but tender English muffin. And some salt to season it all. Nice comfortable Cafe though, big outdoor patio and inside seating, friendly server and busser. Lots of staff there but we had to wait for menus and a drink order. Only 1 server was...
Read moreThe place is a gem for all the right reasons. Morr, the owner, and Kai, the manager, are two very professional individuals who would always make sure customers have a pleasant time. Upside Food is phenomenal. Ingredients are fresh, well prepared, and have high quality. Flavors, textures, portions, appearance, and aroma of all prepared elements are also of superior standard. The eggs Benedict sauce is one the best we have ever had, so that alone makes the visit worth it. Kai herself is a gem; she was caring, genuine, helpful, and had a very humble and professional demeanor toward all customers. She makes visits enjoyable and finds the time to cater to everyone's needs. Morr is the epitome of great customer service, organization, delegation, and management. The place was busy, yet everything seemed to be running smoothly because Morr led with professionalism while inspiring confidence. These two people make it possible to have a great time while enjoying the marvelous food. Downside Valet parking is available for a fee, which most customers use, or it seems like it. We had to walk quite a bit to find parking since there was no space for valet at that moment. There may be a wait. We were assigned a table really quickly, but it took a while to get a waitress/waiter to take our order because the place was packed, and there was a table with a party of 12-14 people. If a customer is faced with this situation, Kai and Morr will see you and cater to you immediately. No customer is invisible nor neglected due to the heavy amount of orders and demands. We highly...
