Bear's Po-Boys offers a delightful taste of the South with its signature sandwiches. During my recent visit, I decided to try their shrimp po-boy, and I can confidently say it was a flavorful experience worth sharing.
From the moment I took my first bite, I was struck by the freshness of the French bread. Unlike many po-boys that can be overly crunchy or stale, Bear's managed to deliver a perfectly soft, yet sturdy roll that cradled the shrimp beautifully. The bread was fresh and held up to the generous portion of shrimp without falling apart, offering the ideal vehicle for all the flavors within.
The shrimp itself was expertly seasoned and cooked to perfectionâtender on the inside with a crispy exterior that added a satisfying crunch with every bite. The combination of textures, paired with the simplicity of lettuce, mayo, tomatos and pickles created a balance that made this po-boy delicious. Each subsequent bite left me wanting more, and it was clear that care and quality were paramount in the preparation of this iconic dish.
As for the service, I was met with friendly staff who were attentive and eager to ensure a pleasant dining experience. They were knowledgeable about the menu and helped make recommendations without hesitation, which added a personal touch to my visit.
The atmosphere at Bear's Po-Boys was casual and relaxed, making it a comfortable spot for lunch or a quick bite. While it may not have had the most vibrant ambiance, it perfectly suited the laid-back charm of a traditional po-boy shop.
Overall, my experience at Bear's Po-Boys was a success. The delicious shrimp po-boy exceeded my expectations, and I left feeling satisfied and eager to return. Iâll definitely be making my way to their Covington, LA location soon to try in more of their famous roast beef po-boy. If you find yourself in the area, don't miss out on this gemâyour taste buds...

âAs the lead Alpha Wolf, I have to sayâBearâs Roast Beef in Covington is an absolute Wolfpack legend! My aunt, Pamela Hebert, brought me over, and right from the moment we stepped into the den, the hospitality was unmatched. Shout out to my aunt for making this epic trip happenâcouldnât have done it without her guidance!
The front of the house is run by two incredible girls who greet every guest like royalty. Their smiles, energy, and attention to detail made Papa Z and me feel immediately at home. Every member of the crew we met, including the chef, added to the experience with genuine friendliness and care. You can tell they take pride in every detail of the operation, and it shows.
Now, the foodâoh, the food! Papa Z and I were howling like full-on alphas at the rich, juicy, perfectly seasoned roast beef. Every bite was bursting with flavor, hitting deep and satisfying like a true Wolfpack feast. My spirit couldnât help but growl for more, but the portions were so generous that I had to save half for tomorrowâand Iâm already counting down the hours until I can finish it. Even the bread was perfect, sturdy enough to hold the epic layers of roast beef, yet soft enough to melt in your mouth.
A massive thanks to Bear, the boys in the kitchen, the two amazing front-house stars, and the entire crew for making this meal unforgettable. From the welcome at the door to the last bite of savory goodness, every detail was perfect. Wolfpack-approved in every way. Papa Z and I will definitely be back, and next time, weâll be howling louder, growling harder, and diving into another round of pure roast beef bliss. If youâre in Covington and want a meal that hits like an alpha wolfâs feast, this is your den....

Let me just say thisâif youâre headed to New Orleans from Mississippi and you donât pull over at Bearâs in Metairie, turn around and try again.
Bearâs isnât just a sandwich stopâitâs a rite of passage. Tucked off the side of the road like a local secret, this humble gem has perfected one thing above all: consistency. Iâve been making this pilgrimage for years, and every time, the experience feels like catching up with an old friend who never changes in the best way possible.
The bread? Always fresh. Pillowy in the middle with just the right outer crunch that soaks up all the good stuff without falling apart. Thatâs poâboy architecture at its finest. Whether itâs roast beef dripping with gravy, the shrimp fried golden and stacked high, or the catfish with a little Cajun kickâBearâs delivers with zero fuss, no shortcuts, and maximum flavor.
And donât get me started on the portions. These poâboys come fully loaded, the kind of sandwich that demands two hands and maybe a few napkins on standby.
In a city where food is religion, Bearâs might not be the flashiest cathedralâbut itâs the corner chapel where the faithful gather. If the doors are open when I roll through, you better believe thatâs my first stop.
