Hair in our crepe and the quiche was cold in the middle. And stale. I wanted to ignore the few bad reviews for this place, but what you will read is true: very dirty throughout the entire restaurant, stale food, cold in the middle, and now hair. We alerted the owner about the hair—we had no intention of making this information public (people are entitled to their mistakes), but when we told the lady we found hair in our crepe, she said “I apologize, I’m so sorry...” and then she took the half-eaten crepe from our table without saying another word, or offering any redress. I so wanted to love this place. Now I just want to find a toilet.
In addition, not that I care (but my girlfriend does), as of the time of our visit (July 2019) there were no savory options for vegetarians. If the warning about the hair doesn’t move you and you are vegetarian, maybe the fact that there’s nothing for you to eat besides the many sugar bombs in the display case might.
There are many good reviews, I’m hoping our visit was a fluke. But my guess is that we are not alone. Overall: GROSS.
ADDENDUM:
The Snohomish County Health Department has been contacted.
We received a rebuttal from the owner (see Raquel’s review) which states a few mistruths. The first is that we paid with a Groupon. While we did use a groupon, we also paid another $17 in actual money. If the owner were inclined to be a savvy business person, she could have refunded part or all of that $17. She could have given me back the $5 I tipped her (before I had any idea that the experience would be so dreadful), or offer a credit. Also, the owner says that Raquel’s crepe was almost totally eaten, also not true. About 2/3 of it was eaten, which was the amount of crepe that DID NOT HAVE HAIR IN IT, as far as we can tell. Had Raquel begun eating from the other end, only 1/3 would have been eaten, unless somewhere within that third was MORE HAIR. The point being that the amount of crepe that was eaten does not negate the fact that there was HAIR. IN. IT. What if she had eaten the entire crepe, only to find, at the last bite, a small, dead rat? Would we be in the same boat? No refund or consideration because we ate the food before we discovered a dead rat? Curious logic here. (Go to google maps and look up this restaurant. We have posted a photo of the “small bite” of crepe, and if you look closely, you will see the hair).
Also, the owner says that I ate my quiche in its entirety and never mentioned the fact that it was cold inside and hot on the outside (a blatant food safety violation). The reason I ate the whole thing was because it was delicious, and I love stale food, especially when it’s covered in cheese. But I think I’m sick. I didn’t say anything, because we already felt bad and embarrassed for her about having to bring up the hair—I didn’t want to make her feel under attack. Plus I ate the whole thing, and so was not in a position to provide negative feedback lest it appear as though I was seeking recompense. I thought it better to keep quiet, but the facts are the facts: it was a reheated mess. Stale, cold in the middle, hot on the outside, the kind of thing that sends people to ER’s.
Dear owner, we wanted to love your place, but it is a hygienic nightmare: your food is reheated and not fresh, your business is one giant health code violation, and your business acumen tells me your business’s days are numbered.
As a business owner myself, I’m hopeful that you figure some things out before it’s too...
Read moreThis cute little family-owned bakery just opened up and it is a great addition to the Perrinville neighborhood. As there is not much in this area, it is nice to have another local eatery without having to drive to downtown Edmonds. The bakery is family-operated and named after the family's two daughter's Amelia and Mia.
My family and I decided to make our Valentine's day dinner this year. But as we had driven by the new bakery several times in the past two weeks, for dessert, I was very anxious to try Mel & Mia's. We were so glad we did. I am gluten-free and normally can't partake I enjoying scrumptious desserts at yummy bakeries. On a whim with only half-hopes, I called prior to inquire if they offered any gluten-free options. I was ecstatic when Amelia informed me that they had GF options for me... a chocolate cake and a crème brûlée. There were only two options but regardless, I was grateful they even had that!
The ambiance of the shop was cute and open. They even have a private back room. This is where we sat... Immediately when I saw the room I thought, " This room would be perfect for a book club, meeting, bridal shower..." and began mentally planning all my future gatherings with my friends. The family had decorated it in a very chic and fun way with a motif of white, black and pale pink. Hard to describe but I posted pics... Needless to say, very cute and welcoming!
As for the customer service, the bakery is family-operated and they care about their customers.... a very friendly family feel. As you walk-in, they greet you as though you are an old friend and they are very happy to see you. Each employee is very friendly and accommodating. My daughter and I ordered a hot chocolate to share. It arrived in a huge mug. Since I wanted whipped cream and she did not, my husband asked for another mug to split the two. Instead, they made us another whip cream-less hot chocolate for my daughter as they said "we have leftover milk so it would be a shame to waste it." So cute!
On to the food... my family ordered the Valentine's Day crème brûlée for us to share. I noticed Mel & Mia's used a larger diameter ramekin than the tiny crème brûlée ramekins you normally get in fancy restaurants. The cost was a whopping $5.75 which was amazing. All three of us had plenty to eat and could barely finish it. Despite the generous portion and the amazing cost, the dessert's presentation and taste were spectacular. Since it was Valentine's day, they added a yummy sauce all around the ramekin. The sauce had a pretty design of Valentine's hearts. Food Rating: Presentation- 5, Taste- 5, Quality 5... Overall SUPERB!
As we departed, the family's little son and dad bid us a farewell and thanked us for coming in. The entire experience was personable and put a smile on our faces. It was a "sweet" end to our family's Valentine's day! Thank you,...
Read moreIt’s really ZERO stars. *My crepe had a hair in it.When I told the owner, all I got was: aww, I’m sorry. Then she collected the dishes from the table and walked away. No refund offer or an offer to make me another one - not that I would have eaten anything else there. Not to mention my boyfriend’s quiche which was stale and cold. Mind you: she said everything was made to order. We got up to leave and the lady had the nerve to say: bye, thank you very much! Like absolutely nothing went wrong there. AND the place is dirty and the furniture is beat up. Let’s start counting down the days for this business to close. It’s just a matter of time, folks.
Responding to the owner’s response: more than a small bite was left on my plate. About a 1/3 of the crepe was left uneaten. I wish I had started eating it from the opposite side, I would have found the white hair a lot sooner. Regardless of the amount of food left on my plate, I would expect a lot more than “I’m sorry” from the establishment. It sounded a lot more like “oh well” than a genuine apology if I may say. Although we did use a Groupon to pay for part of the meal, we also paid the remaining amount with a credit card and tipped $5 which was more than 20% of the total. So a refund could have come from that form of payment if you really wanted to offer one. Or perhaps an explanation as why no refund was even a consideration. The fact that the quiche was completely eaten doesn’t change the fact that it wasn’t fully warmed up, which is a food safety issue. Also, I’d like to mention, we kindly waited until the only other customer inside had left - trying to save you the embarrassment - to say anything about the meal we had just had. You are 100% right about one thing though: you bakery is not for us. We appreciate clean places, clean upholstery and HAIRLESS FOOD. Not...
