Bakehouse by Joe Murphy (Madison) — Restaurant in Madison

I went to Bakehouse a month ago, but wanted to wait for a second visit and to try more items before writing a review. The second visit left no doubt, this is a great bakery. First of all everything is labeled, priced, and beautifully displayed; so many bakeries don't clearly show the prices and I hate that. There are whole cakes, cake slices, jumbo cookies and pastries, but the selection isn't overwhelming; if you're looking for cupcakes or a display case filled with a dozen varieties of mediocre cookies you won't find that here. This is a smaller but well curated collection of sweets; some a bit too expensive but most are priced fairly. Another plus is the staff, everyone is so friendly and on the most recent visit Robin was just a pleasure to chat with and really helped us out. The ginger cake slice was excellent, moist and dense, as was the ginger cookie, perfectly chewy and loaded with ginger flavor. The apple turnover was great and had plenty of apple, and the coffee crumb cake was a real value, a gigantic slice that was so big we cut it into three pieces and had some the next day. Cinnamon, a thick layer of cake and just enough crumb on top. So good. The only item not quite up to par was the double chocolate cookie, it looked terrific but lacked deep chocolate flavor and was a tad over-baked. Can't wait to come back here and keep trying different things, the blackout cake and carrot cake both look incredible. We visited this down today with the intention to enjoy the main street and have dinner. However this bakery caught my eye and I thought of giving a try. And I feel I would have regretted if didn’t have taken that impulsive decision to check this place out . Tried coffee which was great . Tried the lovely almond croissant. Spectacular pastries, friendly staff & a tranquil atmosphere! I drop in every so often to treat myself to something special, and am always pleased with how consistently delicious everything is. I had the parm & leak pastry for the first time this morning, and I am blown away! The mushroom quiche & cinnamon roll are my regular treats, and they are always baked to perfection.
