Ok. I recently moved to VA, and have heard dozens of times that âyou have to get to Swirlies!â It took me a few months, but I finally decided to give it a try. I have to say, I was pretty disappointed. Starting off with essentially four teenagers, with clearly zero customer service skills, being the only employees in sight. It felt more like they were helping me at gun point than performing a job. Which showed when they got my entire order wrong. Twice. Even though it was explained to at least three of the four workers throughout the ordeal. No adult in sight to complain to even if I wanted. Then after receiving what was described as âShaved ice layered with vanilla soft serve with new spill stopper cups.â I was given what amounts to a snow cone (not shaved ice) with about a tablespoon of ice cream on top. The âspill stopperâ also didnât prevent the top from falling on the ground. The ice that was left, was flavorless. So, essentially I paid $7.00 for a large (even though I asked for a regular size 3 times) cup of ice and a tablespoon of ice cream. Determined to make this a good experience I threw out my cup of ice and decide to try a sundae. I ordered a âmediumâ size which was enough ice cream for a small child, with fudge that tasted and looked more like Hersheyâs syrup than fudge topping. The ice cream was half way decent, but very short of what you would expect from whatâs touted as a high quality soft-serve ice cream shop. More airy, than dense. All of these deficiencies come from cutting corners for fear of losing profits, when if they invested in quality workers, didnât overrun the ice cream so much, used quality ingredients and quality flavoring for the ices, and had concern for proper presentation, they could increase the prices accordingly and more people would come to make up the difference. Quality sells. And while everyone local I mentioned that I have to complain, said âthey donât care they do so much business.â Iâll reply, if they did so well, theyâd care more about their business. Letâs hope...

Read moreI love, love, love this place! I just can't think of how to best describe why. Their ice cream is better than other... more "royal" brands. Way better in my opinion. The atmosphere is perfect - its all outside so the kiddos can run around - supervised, of course. And they play music you would hope to hear from a place called "Swirlie's".
I haven't been, but they have movies nights on the weekends. I hear these nights are quite popular, so plan for the crowds. They also sell BBQ on the weekends.
There is just too much goodness about Swirlie's to put in a short review.
You won't be disappointed by visiting any time, but remember when a place is as awesome as this, it's going to be popular. If you don't like crowds, plan a weekday...
