Attention Chen Garden owners: I can sympathize with the changes of business from eating in, dining, having a cocktail or two to the highly impersonal, grab bag box, bag take out- where the cashier is reaching out a window and delivering orders- and you can’t see who’s smiling cause we all have goddam masks on. But for those of us who have been regular customers in “better times”, the reason anyone comes back is because they like the food, menu choice and how it’s prepared. This wasn’t the case with our takeout order last week. The order was simple- but generally a favorite. We chose the Lo Mein w chicken and string beans, broccoli in brown ( oyster) sauce. It was horrible, lacked flavor, hardly any chicken and Lo Mein was not the typical fatter noodle mixed w oils, seasoning, etc. It was more like Ramon Noodles cooked, but totally lacking flavor. The beans, broccoli was not the dish we expected.Gooey sauce and crunchy beans. It’s not likely we’ll be returning to Chen’s or recommending to others, friends. Management would typically oversee the food, dishes being prepared . This was not what was...
Read moreGot a few sushi rolls and some fried rice, didn't really look at much else on the menu. There is a nice variety of different kinds of rolls available, and I picked a known favorite and a few of the more unique ones to try (Alaska roll, super spider, Hawaiian maki). The rolls look nice, albeit a little on the small side, especially for the price. I was also shocked and disappointed that my $15 Hawaiian maki isn't made with crab meat (like the menu says) but with imitation crab sticks. The other 2 rolls were fine, not bad but nothing to write home about.
Not sure how they were able to get the fried rice so dark and yet have it still taste so bland. It tastes like it doesn't have any soy sauce in it, somehow (this coming from someone who eats low-sodium and is sensitive to salt, and soy sauce).
Got the food as takeout and it was ready a few minutes before the 20 minutes estimated pickup time I was given (which I anticipated so I was there early). Quick service. Overall not bad. Filling, but generally bland and a bit overpriced for the quantity of food and use of...
Read moreOrdered take out. Arrived when I was told to. Order was not ready. Sat there for over 40 minutes only to have them come and tell me that a couple of the items I ordered were not available. Said they would refund me for the items. Never did. I called back they said they would refund for the items, but still didn't. Ended up disputing the charge with the credit card company. They disputed my dispute. Eventually, the credit card company found in my favor. Just could not believe how they refused to make a refund for items they ran out of. The way they handled it made me never go back there again. I had gotten lazy only going to Chen's for Chinese and sushi, but now had a reason to explore some other restaurants in town. Found Osaka on Elm Street which I think has much better sushi than Chen's Garden, and way friendlier staff. Also found Sun City Sushi and Golden Tao, both of which I also prefer over Chen's. Chen's Garden lost a long time customer who ordered out or visited two to three times a month. Ended up being their loss, and...
