When we arrived at Golden Flame, we noticed the lighting in the restaurant was perfect and the place looked clean. I was also intrigued by the booth seating, which actually differentiates between one seat and the other rather than just a straight bench.
The serving sizes were large, and I couldn't eat my entire meal. I was surprised the coleslaw came in such a small cup, barely larger than one of those disposable ketchup cups from McDonald's or Arby's. The potato salad, on the other hand, came in a large dish and was a huge portion. I would've preferred things the opposite way around with more coleslaw and less potato salad, but with this being my first visit, I didn't know how it would be served.
The ham and cheese croissant also came with a cup of soup, and I chose Creamy Broccoli. Both the croissant and the soup were fabulous!
However, there was a major downside to our visit. The waitress acted like she was looking down her nose at us. We felt out of place, as if we didn't belong there. This didn't help that I noticed two of the other patrons staring at us the whole time. We're an average family and we wear normal clothing. We act the same as other families, so I have no idea why we stood out for them. The waitress wasn't very friendly, and that just compounded my discomfort. After we left, my spouse and I commented on how great the food, the prices, and the portions were. We also both remarked that the only thing "off" about our visit was how the waitress behaved towards us. My spouse commented that he felt really out of place because of it, as if he was the only "straight man at a gay bar." Whenever she came to our table, she'd ask us a question quickly and barely wait for an answer before she was gone again. I felt as though we were wasting her time and she didn't want to serve us.
Because of the waitress, I took two stars off of my review. Fix that issue, and this would be a great regular...
Read moreWe were passing through town, headed to Door County so we opted to grab a bite to eat. The food was very reasonable. Broasted chicken was delicious. Rice pudding was great. The overall service, however was lacking attentiveness. [Examples: 1. It took a length of time to place our order ... around 15-20 minutes with others who arrived after us placing orders before us. It seems they were lacking a coordinated system with their servers. Perhaps enhanced training would help. 2. My water glass was empty. The server had passed by our table 2 or 3 times serving other customers. When I asked another server who happened to pass by, if I could have a refill, she was quite brusk in her reply. She must have been having a tough day.] The place seems like a local hang out. Seems like the place has been in business a long time. If you want a cost effective meal this is the...
Read moreTook my fiancé there as we haven’t been there for probably a good 10 years. We always had good experiences in the past, but today sucked. The fries were not cooked all the way and tasted like grease, ordered a charbroiled burger and basically it was a frozen patty that was just thawed out. I asked for golden crispy hashbrowns, and they were definitely raw. My toast was burnt to hell. Nobody ever came back to fill our waters and they never even asked how the food or everything was. What a complete disappointment and waste of time and money. I could’ve bought food from the grocery store that tasted far better. The turkey croissant sandwich was dry too. Just a tip. I always cook my chicken or turkey in broth because it gives it flavor. Water is flavorless and dries the hell out of everything. Thanks for a nice...
