Flaming grill and hibachi in Manville, nj aug 7, 2022
Similar to other reviews. From online reviews, I expected the lunch to be about 15$ per person with drinks. I thought the Buffet would be 8$, but I had read that there is one price online, another on the menu, and a third at checkout. My son is 11, I thought he would be a "kid" price until 12. Inside the front door, the price was posted. I think it was 11.99 each. We went in and ate, and were billed for 3 adults. I commented to the waitress, and she changed it to 2 adults. She said 10 years old is the cutoff for kids' prices. I did mention it to the host and she told the manager. At least he didn't seem pleased. I paid cash and there was no mention of any discount.
The food itself was fine, and there was hand sanitizer at the buffet counter. The best thing I ate was actually the cold seafood salad. And the sesame seed covered fried ball with bean paste inside wàs fun. The honeydew melon was very good. I was hoping for mei fun. No mei fun. Actually there was, on the hibachi, but I don't know how to season it. No pepper steak either, strangely. There were shrimp dishes and chicken dishes, chicken and broccoli had very little flavor. On the bright side, I guess it's not msg heavy here. The pork was good. Cooked, but not overdone. It was boneless ribs, I guess. The salmon was super wimpy. Pink salmon, no particular salmony flavor. Otherwise, There were plenty of fried options. The fried chicken looked good. The eggrolls change to shrimp for the dinner, a worker told me.
I did eat one slightly pleasant sushi. I'm sushi -suspicious. I know it's supposed to be great, so I keep trying. I think the fish was cooked. I like that. The ginger slices were not pink! They were good. And the kimchi was nice, a little something, but not too hot. I got to introduce it to my kid. There were salads. I didn't eat them. 2 soups. Hot and sour soup wasn't very spicy, but it did have seaweed. Maybe not mushrooms though. No tofu cubes. There were 3 cakes. They were super unimpressive. Dry. Unfun. No creme puffy pastry options. Tapioca pudding turned out to be butterscotch. I didn't like it. The Pineapple slices were good. No watermelon, in August. That surprised me. The big grapes (the only grapes) were very fresh.
I was able to get a fine meal out of it, but despite all the dishes, I felt like there wasn't much variety to eat? My son felt that way, too. He came for lo mein and it was disappointing, I think. His standards are not necessarily high. He enjoyed his offbrand ice cream sandwich. The offbrandness amused him. His pink lemonade was good and my hot tea was, too.
I was ok with the price after we took off the third person. The staff was all nice, except .. that...
Read moreDon’t get me wrong, I enjoy the food, even more so when they add new things, etc. Definitely not my favorite buffet in terms of food but I enjoy it. However, it’s the staff that makes it hard to enjoy eating here overall. I feel as though I’m always being stared at and NOT to refill my drinks. I understand there’s a time limit but I (as a frequent visitor) am always being rushed from the moment I sit down at the booth. I recall a time when my soup was nearly taken away the moment I brought it back to the table. And sometimes they will literally tell you to hurry up. My friend does not want to come back to this buffet, as she says it’s incredibly hard to eat when someone is always staring at you. This is the only buffet I’ve went to that hounds me the moment I sit down at the booth. They WILL start getting aggressive with the taking of your plates, etc if you’re there longer than they want you there. Which is far from the maximum you’re allowed to eat (in reference to the sign which says I have about an hour)
Update, a year later: Had to come back and take one less star away, just because the staring is now unbearable. They don’t even care to hide it anymore, they’ll literally be a few feet away from you. And they give you the check SUPER early and look offended if you go up for more food. Overall, really uncomfortable experience. I’ll just drive a little further to a different one. Also asked for apple juice and they didn’t put any ice, as if I wanted lukewarm...
Read moreSpend your money somewhere else. This place has variety but none of the dishes are great. The rolled sushi has way more rice than it should. Our waiter was particularly rude. She asked us if everything was okay the moment we started eating and came back once later to remove my boyfriend's finished plate, leaving mine, which sat on the table the ENTIRE time we were eating. When she brought our bill she stood there and watched as I left a tip that reflected the poor service we received. She proceeded to lean over me pointing at the bill and try to explain something about the tip, unintelligibly. I confirmed that I was finished with the bill, to which she responded by snatching the bill and throwing my card across the table, all while ranting loudly, again unintelligibly. I was so upset by her outburst I ended up leaving an additional tip on the table, thinking at the moment I was somehow at fault. It's a shame some waiters use intimidation and childish outbursts to get tips instead of reasonable service. There are many amazing restaurants a short drive away, better off going...
