***4 1/2 stars*** It's been ages since I've been to Maplewood (literally the last time was to see Jobs with Michael Fassbender in theaters, which was in 2015), but the minute I got to the downtown area I remembered how insane the parking/driving situation is over here. Weird one-way parking spots, yet two-way streets, and obviously the fact that it was two days before Christmas on a Saturday wasn't ideal. Since I didn't feel like being a creepy parking vulture, I just drove straight through the chaos and parked a few blocks away in a residential area. No drama, more Fitbit steps. Coda was easy to find despite numerous businesses in the area - prominent signage right in the middle of everything. This is my kind of place, with an edgy/dark interior and gastropub vibes. Despite that, I actually saw a ton of families in there, though Coda doesn't scream kid friendly (not anti though, necessarily). My chum and I secured a high top table in the front bar area right next to the window, which allowed for some primo canine viewing, most of whom were appropriately decked out in knitted sweaters. Tis the season. I didn't have to browse the brunch menu for very long, and decided on literally the first item right at the top, which was a pretty classic breakfast sandwich featuring egg (sunny-side up for me), cheese, bacon and my favorite bread-like accompaniment, the almighty biscuit. It was very good, though the biscuit was on the drier side (which, coupled with its crumbly nature, is probably why most people don't go down that road). Everything else on the sandwich was top notch. The roasted potatoes were actually TOO seasoned for me, which is a rarity; it drowned out the actual potato. It was also cooked with onion, so they basically doubled down on the flavoring - I would just cut one of those out, and I think they'd be good. The service was excellent. The place was decently packed and yet our waitress somehow found the time to stop by very regularly and chat for a minute or two each time. Super personable and friendly, and was honestly one of the most pleasant people I interacted with this year in a restaurant (and that's saying something). Unquestionably improved the experience. My only reluctance to coming back is that nutty downtown area, but I'm not going to blame Coda for that - strong recommend.

I visited Coda kitchen and bar on a recommendation from a friend. At first, I was not impressed with the appetizers. The calamari and fried cheese was nothing to rave about. however, we each ordered something different from the menu and thank god. it definitely changed my mind about the place, lol. I ordered the blackened chicken sandwich, and wow was it good. it had a little "kick" to it, add to that, the honey mustard sauce on the side and wow. An amazing sandwich. The burgers were also very good. The classic burger was good and the jam burger was amazing, if you like smokey flavors then the jam burger is for you! For dessert we had the "blondie" which is their version of a warm brownie with vanilla ice cream. It was delicious, soft and enough chocolate chips that melted in your mouth. However their flourless chocolate cake was AMAZING! it was warm, moist and oh so yummy! Rachel, our waitress, was very nice and great in following up and making sure we were taken care of. The drinks were also amazing. Overall, I would recommend this place and I would go back. Perhaps I'll try something else for appetizers.

I came on a Friday night at about 7:30pm. After running errands at the end of a work day, I wanted to grab some dinner. While searching on yelp for the area I was in for restaurants, Coda popped up. After reading the reviews and seeing the pictures of the food and drinks, dinner at Coda was the choice. I had no reservation but I did call ahead to see if I needed one or if they were busy. The hostess said come on in we can find a space for you. 1st mention is that I love the area this restaurant is located. Upon entry, I was greeted with a friendly smile and seated right away. Covid safety protocols were in place. The drinks were made to perfection. So good. Kudos to the bartender. Our server Michelle B. was friendly. She was very busy serving several tables but she was still attentive. So shout out to her. The food was good also. I felt it could have had more seasoning but still good nonetheless. This establishment is very quaint and you feel like you are at home here. I got very comfortable. I definitely recommend and I would come back.

What's not to live about a friendly environment with good food. We stopped by here at 7pm on Saturday night, and although there wasn't a line, we put our names down for the wait list. 5 minutes later we got the call that a table opened up (just two of us), what luck! They reduced the menu to just two full pages, but it still a large menu, and so far everything that we have had has been great. Tonight I had the Crab Cakes and my fiancee had the scallops, although we started with the Cobb salad and the cauliflower appetizers, which were also great. We've been here a number of times throughout the few years that we've lived in NJ and noticed that they just changed their lighting from a stark white LED type to a much warmer color which makes it feel a lot more cozy, even if the sound still reverberated off the walls. I'm hoping that they can address the noise with more of those acoustic panels to absorb at some point

Came in with reservations and was seated promptly. I ordered the crab and avocado omelet with coffee and an expresso martini. The omelet was amazing as well as the drinks. I do think the service was a little slow. I received coffee and had to wait on cream with sugar. When the food was served, my date and I had to wait on condiments and additional napkins. I would definitely come again for brunch since the food and drinks were delicious.
