Ok, so I have a Korean GF that wanted to check out this spot before the Summer began.. She’s always introduced me to different aspects & takes of Korean cuisine.
My experience at this restaurant had always been relatively positive due to the younger man who often works the registers & seats people as well as the younger woman who will often check tables to make sure customers are happy.. My first 2 experiences sitting down & eating with my girlfriend were great & we quickly figured out that we prefer sitting at the tables as sitting on the floor eating isn’t very comfortable even with the cushions.
Since those 2 visits I’ve ordered twice to-go with no issues whatsoever & the younger man helped me out when coming to pick up my food.
NOW, the last time I went to IL Mee (3-4 weeks ago) I noticed that both the younger man & younger woman were not in & it was only the older Korean women who were running the restaurant. The older lady with the black short hair was very short & rude to me from the point I entered the restaurant.
She asked me who was dining in & I said myself, with free tables open. She told me that it’d be a 20-25 minute wait for a table.. I was upset driving so far to eat & seeing opened tables, but decided to sit by the door at the waiting area… After sitting with no help for about 3-4 minutes, a group with no reservation (the lead of the group told me they didn’t have a reservation after asking how long the wait was) & the older lady immediately asked if they had one, the lady of the group said no, the older lady asked how many & sat them immediately. Group of 5 with a todler to make 6.
They were sat & I still had to wait another 2-3 minutes with open tables to get a seat. From there it was very spacey on being checked in on about ordering, my food, etc. but everytime she came by the table she rushed me for picking my food. I got no help almost the entire time I was eating but observed her going to the non black customers & asking if everything was fine.
Finally when I was basically wrapped up with my meal, I legit sat down for 10 minutes looking around waiting for anyone to ask me for a togo box & for the check. When she did finally bring me the check, she took it upon herself to circle the recommended tips on it….. What the actual…. So basically the lady was just as bold as she was foul. I waited at the register for someone to take my Apple Pay for another 3-5 minutes.
I took it upon myself to write out “Very bad service” on the check & did not tip anything.
I might be back to eat/complain, but I’ll be sure to bring my Korean gf so I am not misunderstood.
Black & Brown people, be wary of the older workers in this establishment. They don’t hide their skepticism & bigotry well. Disappointing considering I enjoy...
Read moreWhen me and my fiance came here before we had such a lovely waitress and so friendly. This time around two older women, rude. First off they didn’t smile, but when other Korean people came in bubbly happy. Very clear that we weren’t welcome.
My husband who is Chinese spotted that.
Regardless of that, he asked for extra rice in a dish ready to pay. “No” and that’s okay but then he asked for a dish, that came with rice.
Might as well acted as if we spat on the floor.
So the dishes come out fantastic.
Then she ‘forgets’ the rice, that my husband really wanted extra for. So we remind her, I knew that was on purpose. As she was so mad he asked. Which btw I work in restaurant, very common for people to ask extra… and you just say no or you charge on the side…
Then my fiance, after we paid orders more rice. And immediately holding the bowl hostage, like “2.90,” so HE COULD have ordered extra…. again fine, he paid it. As a server I always gave a little bit but I understand it’s a family restaurant.
The final thing was when my fiance went to the bathroom. The woman lifted the pen up to see if we tipped. In front of me!! Didn’t even take the paper..: Which no I am not, if you’re going to act like we’re an inconvenience then no.
As a server, and she immediately complained walking to the back. I speak a bit of Korean btw ;) joys of being bilingual.
My fiance was nice enough to leave 2.80 but I think he should’ve not even left that with that attitude. She was ruder to him than me.
I understood what she was saying. Not coming back....
Read moreHad lunch here on a weekend. The unassuming exterior and location slightly conceals a cozy and clean dining interior of this restaurant. Entered the restaurant and noticed it was busy and about ⅔ capacity. Our group was greeted and then escorted to our table immediately. The one waitress who took our order in the beginning was the only issue we encountered with the overall service. We had a question about one of the dish and she did give an answer in a rude manner as to her not knowing what's in one of the dish and that "the cook in the kitchen knows". We also had service from the other two waitresses, who were friendlier and more attentive. Banchan that was served with our meals were delicious and a decent variety, but felt like it was less quantity than expected. One in our group had the japchae and stated that it was ok and nothing to rave about. Another had the soondubu-jjigae and said it was good (maybe needed more flavor), but it was very filling. I had the yeomso tang, which was very delicious and filling. Good variety of traditional Korean dishes available here. Although, when I did ask the waitress, she said they don't offer jjajangmyeon or jjampong. Their weekday lunch deal seems very appealing. If I'm nearby during weekday lunch, I'd stop by and try different meals. I do like the section of the restaurant with traditional Korean style family dining tables; very charming. Ample parking available in the...
