My late wife had been wanting to go to the Hideout for the 6 years she lived in Marion and we never managed to get by the place. So when our friends wanted to take my current wife and me out to the Hideout for my birthday I was eager to go.
The ambiance was nice, but not as heavily '20s as the antique car outside might lead you to believe. The wait staff in general was great and our server (I forget his name) did an excellent job.
My friends ordered a calamari appetizer, which I had a taste of and found it to be pretty good. The bread that came with the meal was okay, but nothing to write home about... O'Charley's rolls are way better. I ordered the Private Eye and chose the Red Pepper Soup and Baked Sweet Potato as sides. The soup was absolutely awesome and the bourbon sauced baked sweet potato was also very good. My issue is with the entrée. The “Private Eye (12oz)” is described by the menu as “Black Angus Cut Ribeye, our most flavorful steak.” I’ve eaten at restaurants in all 48 contiguous states. I’ve eaten at very pricy steakhouses and just as many greasy spoons from Augusta Maine to Bellingham, Washington to El Centro, California and all points in-between and I can honestly say that this ribeye was among the worst, least flavorful pieces of meat I have ever had the misfortune of eating. It was excessively fatty (yes I know a ribeye is a fatty piece of meat, but I had to cut about 15% of the total piece off because it was pure fat). I could have dealt with the fatty issue, but what was inexcusable was that the steak had NO flavor. I couldn’t detect any seasoning and it tasted like it had been cooked on a steel griddle and not over a flame grill. Twenty five years ago I used to wait tables at a Denny’s in a Chicago suburb and this steak was inferior to the T-bones we used to sell for $9.99 (soup, salad and two sides included). I hated to have to tell my thoughtful friends that my steak was terrible, but what could I do, lie to them? There’s another meal on the menu titled “The Scam” and quite frankly, that is what this sorry excuse for a ribeye should be called. I don’t mind paying a premium for a great meal. I’ve paid fifty bucks or more for a great steak, but to charge $25.99 for this sorry excuse of a steak is an outright rip-off. My wife also ordered a steak, though she doesn’t remember what menu item it was, and she had the same complaint as me about the lack of flavor and apparent mistreatment of the steak (cooked on a griddle and not over a fire).
So my advice? DO NOT ORDER THE RIBEYE. Quite frankly I would recommend staying away completely from any of the steaks. I still contend that my ribeye was cooked on a griddle and if that is true, then the steaks will never have good flavor. If I ever go back to the Hideout, I will probably just get the soup and maybe an appetizer and salad. I might also ask the management to show me what they are cooking their steaks on, just to see if I can verify my suspicions. Look at the images on the web based menu and you will see there are no grill lines present on any of the steaks shown… to me that says they are fried and...
Read moreFirst off I've been in the restaurant business for over 25 yrs 20 of them as an executive chef so I give the benefit of the doubt when it comes to criticism of a restaurant and the food. To start with I was looking forward to coming back to the hideout after it's reopening so I went ahead on line and made reservation which the earliest for two was 730 pm on a sat. And it was 3pm at the time. I waited 5 min. And went back on line to make the reservation and now the time changed to earliest 745 I said to myself wow they must be packed which must be a good thing. We get their early like 725 to my surprise the pk lot was almost empty and the restaurant was practically empty. We get seated and we order our drinks and it took 10 min. Or so to get them and we're told by the waiter they were backed up which confused us. We ordered the artichoke dip which was OK but upon looking at the menue I was shocked at the limited menue and the outrageous prices! I mean marys in herrin and toms place which are a fine dinning white tablecloth restaurants have similar prices. We ordered the chopped steak with sauted veggies on top and got hard crusted overcooked ground beef with a handful of burnt veggies on top. The mushrooms were unrecognizable to be honest. As a chef I would never have sent a plate of food looking like that out to a customer. We were hungry so tried to eat some of it but it really was unedible. During our dinning experience we asked for A1 sauce since the hamburger had no flavor whatsoever and was given an empty bottle?! The salad was OK blue cheese dressing not the best. The kicker was for these two overcooked hamburger meals with burnt veggies and 1 draft beer and a coke a whopping $68.00! To put it mildly very dissatisfied and will never go back and I would encourage anyone not to go waste your time and money! I've eaten there in the past before the fire and it was good so I don't know what happened but they need to change all aspects from the service to the food to the prices to the presentation of the food because with all the competition around the area I don't see how anyone...
Read moreWent there for the first time in a long while & had a couple of friends with me.
Please note: They are currently only taking reservations. No walk-ins. You must utilize the Open Table app to make a reservation.
The restaurant looks wonderful with some design changes after repairs were completed.
The service remains attentive and pleasant based on our experience with Christine.
We ordered drinks first: a spicy Bloody Mary for me and my companions each got a beer. A Sam Addams Winterfest and a Schlafly Pale Ale. We were all very happy with our choices. The drink menu seems to have gotten smaller, but that's okay. There still many delightful options.
Our appetizers included the spinach & artichoke dip & fried mushrooms. The dip was fantastic! Had a cheesy gooey texture & a hint of a kick that paired well with the tortilla chips served with it. (I will say the dip to chip ratio leaves a little to be desired. A small bowl of dip with a huge platter of chips doesn't last long.) The fried mushrooms were cooked well, but the batter had no seasoning and seemed watery (?) & the dip, while tasting good, was a bit thin. Listen, we still finished them.
I had a steak & shrimp combo with the steak ordered medium-rare. The steak was cooked perfectly & the shrimp (a 4-piece grilled side) was seasoned well & tasted delicious.
My friends ordered Cajun-seasoned Mahi Mahi and were very well pleased with their selections. The sides are plentiful in both options and the serving size.
Our sides were salads (mine Caesar & theirs Garden salads) & they were tasty. The dressings had a good viscosity to them & weren't watery at all. I had garlic mashed potatoes (delicious!) & asparagus, which was seasoned & cooked perfectly. (I ordered the asparagus separately.) They had baked sweet potato and steak fries & had no complaints.
We ate waaaayyy too well to have dessert. Omg! I most ordered something to take home, but I didn't. There were several options for us, but we were just so full!
Had a great meal and so happy The...
