I got the fried chicken breast platter with a side of cabbage and a side of mashed potatoes. I also got a banana pudding dessert.
My rating is for the food. The place is nice and clean and well-staffed but they took 50 minutes to make my food after I put in the order, which I'm not really crazy about - at least they said on the order form that they would take that long.
I'm a bit conflicted since some of the items were brilliant and some were just OK. The banana pudding was indeed exciting, not only it it have a great texture and taste, but they did something to make it a little spicy and it went well with the dish overall. An impressive dessert.
The mashed potatoes were delicious: buttery with a substantial taste and the consistency of a firm cream. Well done.
The cabbage was cabbage. Hearty and good but a little plain.
Now the main dish was the fried chicken but that was the weakest item, I think. The texture and cooking of it was perfect - juicy well-cooked inside and crunchy fried skin. However, it seemed to have absolutely no sort of seasoning at all. Seems they just took a chicken breast and fried it and put it on the tray. I didn't even taste any salt on it.
They gave some packets of hot sauce, which were pretty bad and some sort of sweet little muffin, which was good. At $20 for the chicken breast with two sides, it's not exactly a steal and I consider it slightly overpriced.
So mostly you'll be getting home cooking here and I don't necessarily mean that in the best way possible - It's good, healthy, and serviceable, but you can tell mama's working a full-time job and not experimenting much with grandma's...
Read moreI love this establishment and have been a repeat customer at primarily the Windsor Mill location. Since moving, this location is closer to me now and I have ordered from here at least five times. The staff have been pleasant and efficient when picking up my online orders in the restaurant. Last night was my first issue with my delivery order. For those who order the salmon, it is typically tender, seasoned with salt and what appears to be parsley. For $32, this is what I received; an unseasoned, dry, and overcooked piece of fish. The side items were consistent; delicious ( I got the cabbage and yams) but I was very dissatisfied because I usually love the salmon and was really looking forward to this meal. If they did not have the proper ingredients they should have called and offered an alternate option. I attempted calling with no answer, however I understand they were near closing. I called today to leave a message for management, but the mailbox was full. After reading other reviews, I see that management typically does not respond to balanced or negative reviews, nor offers a credit or comp for dissatisfactory food. Constructive criticism should be valued and addressed reasonably. As a medical black business owner myself, I understand staffing challenges due to the pandemic- however taking accountability, knowing limitations, and being appreciative of all clientele (especially regulars) are all paramount in retaining customers and...
Read moreLimited menu. There is seating, but the place is geared for takeout, and despite that service is very slow. Poor customer service seems to be a recurring theme. The place is kept relatively clean, so if you choose to eat your takeout order inside you can, but the seating is very close to together. This is not really a "soul food" restaurant per se, but more of a chicken rib and fish joint. Soul food to me is more of the esoterica in african american cuisine (oxtail, black eyed peas, chittlins, etc...) and none of that is on the menu for those that may have a taste for it. Disappointing. I had the whiting meal with collards and mac-n-cheese. The Collards were salty, and full of stems and sticks... which means they have poor prep chefs or just don't give a crap. The mac-n-cheese was good. It's not creamy but baked in cheese, which I prefer. The fish was also good. It wasn't overcooked and it had a very flavorful coating. All in all, I'd probably go back if I had a taste for the things they have on their limited menu. But i'd probably stay away from the collard greens and try the cabbage next time. They've just opened, and you would expect them to come out of the gate with their best foot forward. Lets hope they are a late bloomer and pick it up going forward...I was excited we were getting a soul food restaurant in the area...but that initial excitement has been extinguished with my first...
