Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard — Restaurant in Maryland

I purchased a regular blendini from this Ritas Ice on July 17 2017 at around 6:20 pm. There were two employees present, one male and one female. The female's name was Satey according to the TIP jar, but I will refer to her as the female. While waiting for my blendini, I witnessed the male put a plastic spoon in his mouth carrying ice cream that looked suspiciously like the ice cream that I was waiting for. While the young male was eating the ice cream both he and the female saw me watching them. The male had a surprised look on his face while the female quickly snatched the spoon out of his mouth. The female then immediately presented me with a blendini that was, pardon my oxymoron, a hot mess. The cup had syrup all down the side and edges and the females finger and thumb had ice cream on them. I presume this to be from wrestling the cup from the males hands. I asked if the male had just taken a bite from my blendini, as it looked like it was missing a portion and the container wasn't full. I asked for the manager and the female said they was in back. I asked to speak to them, and waited about half a minute before the male opened the window and said the manager wasn't present at the store. I was not given a refund, and I threw away the uneaten by me blendini. I will not be returning to this store Defense Hwy, and I do not recommend anybody else purchase ice cream from an this establishment. Especially if those two are present. Order a strawberry blendini and the vanilla wafers tasted as if the box was just sitting wide open as the air got to it. When we arrived it was not well lit at all. As a matter of fact there were no lights on from the outside which was difficult to determine if they were open or not. Once we walk to the window and knocked on it someone came to assist. The first thing that I said was we didn’t know if u were open or not, where are your lights we can’t see the menu. She stated that they were off and were using to security cameras to see who walks up. After waiting maybe 5 or less for my order we walk away and I notice more people were walking to the establishment. As soon as I got in the car I see all of the lights on and everything was well lit for people to read the menu. I thought that was strange that my kids and I had to struggle to read in the dark and under the impression that the lights were out, now we’re functioning the entire time...almost everything that we asked for they didn’t have. This was the first and the last I will be visiting...

I ordered an ice tonight at this location and oddly was asked to pay first. I gladly obliged and paid for the ice that was a little over $3. At the same time there was a large group of people who ordered multiple items and were not asked to pay first. I asked the employee helping me if it was typical to pay first as I’ve never had that happen before. Her response was “it’s just that I’ve had people run off without paying so it’s just something WE do.”

Yet, I literally stood next to a group ordering non-stop that was never asked for payment until over a dozen desserts were made.

I assured the employee that I would not run off with a $3 ice and asked why the group was not asked for payment ahead of time. She said she’s just extra “cautious.” Really curious about what made a 35 year old mother of 2 appear cautious at an ice cream stand? This was embarrassing, demeaning, and obviously rooted in my “appearance.” I do not intend to return and hope others will reconsider this location...
