I was actually researching where to eat in Hilo when I decided to test out the "best restaurants" near to me in Kahului so I could get an idea of how truthful the search was. That's how I found this lunch-only spot. And with a 5-star average, it was worth a try.
ATMOSPHERE: They're located in the former Broke Da Mouth space. It's small and simple with total seating for 12 inside, with two unprotected communal picnic tables outside.
MENU: Tacos, burritos, tortas, Mexican plates, local plate lunches. They no longer offer the "crazy fries" as the current owner took over the place from his brother, but offers an off-the-menu "crazy nachos" in its place. The menu is customizable, so just ask.
FOOD: Steak Burrito The meat was tender with a good natural flavor though not very plentiful, and filled with pinto beans, jalapenos, tomatoes, raw onions, and rice which I got on the side. The overall flavor of the burrito was quite bland, regardless of the chipotle aioli inside which I couldn't detect. Luckily I had salsa at home to wake it from its sleep. Good portion size.
Crazy Nachos This was not listed on their menu but the owner/chef suggested it as I was inquiring on a dish they no longer offer which was the "crazy fries". It was basically traditional nachos with a topping of your choice in which we chose pork. The pork cubes were super tender but very subtle in the flavor department. The guacamole was really tasty and creamy. But that's where the joy ended. It wasn't as cheesy as I had hoped for, lacked sour cream, and ended up being just vapid.
SERVICE: The chef/owner was very welcoming and engaging, explaining in detail the menu and preparation. Food preparation was a quick in under 10 minutes.
OVERALL: Absolutely fresh but the dishes need flavor infusion....
Read moreAloha, everyone. This restaurant offers a good variety of Mexican food choices and they're all delicious, I've eaten most of them. Lol. They cook everything fresh daily. The shrimp ceviche on a crispy tostada is very good. The taste of shrimp and seafood with added sauce on top is light and delicious, makes for a nice light lunch item. The other taco is an Asada taco served on warm corn tortillas with cabbage and cilantro, equally delicious. This is real down home Mexican food, I think the best on the island. I like how the hot sauces that are offered have a nice heat to them. There are other tacos I've tried, so far everything is very good and tasty. You get a good amount of delicious cooked meat for your money. Any item can be made into a plate lunch by adding rice and beans, this is extra $ though. The rice and beans are very good, beans have a bit of cheese on top when served. Yum. Menudo is offered sometimes, best to call and check if available. The coconut flan is new, along with the other desserts they offer. They also sell banana bread 🍞. There's outdoor community seating and to go, (take away) and you can place your order online. Orlando Acevedo just branched out with a brand new Acevedo's Hawaiicano Food truck. It'll be up and around after the new year, so be looking for it around the island. These people are more than happy to customize your order to your liking. They only sell bottled soft drinks and water, no alcohol. I just always take a 🍺 beer, makes the food taste even better. Lol. So, if your looking for great Mexican food this is it! Maybe I'll see you there, cause I eat there a...
Read moreThis place is absolutely delicious and if we lived nearby we would be here constantly!! My hubby and I found this gem during our Maui trip last week, and we stopped in twice because it was sooo good the first time and we wanted to try more. The first time we shared four tacos and they were all excellent (birria, shrimp, fish, and pork chile verde). The chips and salsa are perfect, the chips are thick and extra crunchy, my fave. And the verde salsa is so so good, make sure to try that too! The owner is super friendly and nice, he remembered us the second time we came back which is such a small thing but makes a big impact. The second time I had the ceviche (the best I’ve ever had!! so full of flavor, big pieces of fish, mmmm perfection) and the guac on top was so good, and my hubby had a burrito and there wasn’t a crumb left! It was all so filling and delicious. It was the perfect end to our trip, just wish we could go back!! The food is all excellent and the staff is so kind and friendly. Highly highly recommend!!! We’ve been back home in CA for 5 days now and my hubby just mentioned how he wished we could get this place for...
