I am not a huge sushi fan, but there are some dish that I like from this joint.
ATMOSPHERE: They're located in Maui Mall Village and opened in 2007. Its a mix of booth and counter seating. Big windows let in lots of light.
FOOD: Karaage Chicken Tender chicken pieces that are lightly dusted in cornstarch then deep fried. The flavor is nil, so I dipped them in a little shoyu, which goes well with the chicken's natural juices and deep fried batter.
Crab Mayo I call this "American sushi" because I'm pretty sure its not served in the motherland. Imitation crab and mayo. Plain and simple. And I loved it!
Spicy Ahi My spouse's favorite, and that says a lot about this place, because he is picky when it comes to sushi! He loves the balanced flavor of mayo and sriracha.
Somen Salad My favorite "app" to start with. The noodles were fresh and topped with green onions, seaweed, and bonito flakes. The tiny side cup of sauce could stand to be twice as big.
Hot Dog Maki Don't make fun of me! I told you I'm not a fan of traditional sushi! This kid favorite version is topped with red hot dog slices and furikake. Yum. Shut up!
Miso Soup I never order this because I can make it at home. But I did try it, and it had a medium salty broth with small chunks of tofu. Mainstream.
Dynamite Scallop Mayo I had high hopes for this dish that was served cold. Yuck. I expected it to be a warm dish. The 4 pieces of sushi had a center of panko-crusted mini scallop, and topped high with more of the fishy tasting scallops, and drizzled with oyster sauce. Totally gross.
Stuffed Mushrooms (3 pcs.) 3 good-sized mushrooms caps were stemmed and stuffed in a slightly spicy creamy/sweet/savory mixture of crunchy onions, mushroom stems, and imitation crab. Very tasty.
SERVICE: Hit or miss but I don't expect much from a restaurant of this caliber.
OVERALL: While the fun of it is to grab your favorites off of the conveyor belt, we always order directly from the server. Something about the food going round and round unprotected, just doesn't...
Read moreHorrible Customer Service. We were seated at a tight small both with limited table space. We were a party of 4. We ordered several plates and when I asked the server to clear some of the empty dirty dishes to make room for new plates, she told me no. She explained the plates need to stay on the table till we get the bill. What? I asked for silverware and was given one single tiny plastic fork. Remember we're a party of 4. I asked for a knife so I could cut oversized stuff mushrooms and was told they don't have knives. I asked for salt for edamame (that should have already been salted, but was not)... again was told they don't have salt.
The waitress had a horrible attitude after a while. She over heard me saying "this is nothing personal against her, but it's ridiculous that we have to sit here with dirty dishes stacked all around us". When I handed her the payment, she snatched it out of my hand and when she went to run it through... she threw her hands up and said... "I'm done!" A much friendlier gentleman came back to bring us the receipt to sign. We still tipped the waitress 20%. But she really needs to learn how to deal with customer's a little more effectively if she wants to be in the service industry. Again, the policies were not her fault. But it is totally wrong to have a policy to make your guests sit surrounded by dirty dishes. This just made us want to stop ordering and get the heck out of there. Come up with a more customer...
Read moreIt's been a few years since I've been here, but some recent changes have changed the experience tremendously. It used to be a conveyor belt sushi place, which was fun. Now it delivers your sushi on a little train, which is also unique and cool. The problem now is with the ordering. The iPad is not efficient. We were a party of 5 and it took forever to pass an iPad around, everyone look and decide what they want and enter their order. It's not really as efficient as everyone getting a menu and having a server take your order. Probably fine for 1 or 2 ppl, but not efficient for much more, especially if ppl dont know what they want. We also ended up with items we didn't order somehow. We tried to send them back on the train and it humorously returned 3x. The servers were nice. The sushi was good for the price. The teriyaki chicken was absolutely awful, the worst I ever had. First off, it was fried and soggy. It was like day old leftover teriyaki chicken. Not recommended at all. And on top of all of this, it took about 40 minutes to get seated around 4 in...
